BINHAMMER-Anne Davison, Omaha, died peacefully at age 77 at home under Hospice care on November 30, 2007, surrounded by family. She was born on Sept 4, 1930 in Oneida, N.Y., the daughter of William and Virginia Davison. Childhood and adolescence were spent in Oneida, NY, Royal Oak, MI, Cortland and Rochester, NY, as her father was called to American Baptist congregations in those cities. Because of early high school graduation, she spent a year at Atlas Tire and Battery before enrolling at Kalamazoo College, where she concentrated in Speech and English, graduating in 1952. First prize in a state interpretive speech contest was a highlight of her college experience, as well as meeting her husband-to-be. On June 28, 1952, she was married to Robert Binhammer at Peddie Memorial Baptist Church in Newark, N.J., with her father officiating. The next three years she and Bob lived in Galveston, TX, where Bob completed his doctorate in Anatomy. Anne became an administrative assistant for the Dept. of Pediatrics. Anne’s interest in bird-watching and the environment grew out of the Galveston experience. The next 24 years were spent in Cincinnati, OH where Bob rose through the academic ranks at the U. of Cincinnati Medical School and Anne bore three children. Her beautiful soprano voice added to church and community choirs throughout her adult life, and was sadly missed during the past years. After the children were in school, Anne took on the leadership of the League of Women Voters and worked as an administrative assistant for Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church. A position as Prof. of Anatomy and Associate Dean of the U. of Nebraska College of Medicine took Bob and Anne to Omaha, NE in 1979 and there, Anne became active in the Faculty Women’s Club as well as continued her involvement with the League of Women Voters. She also served as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church of the Cross. During the last 18 years of her life, she dealt with the aftermath of a heart attack and severe stroke with great fortitude and equanimity. She became an advocate for the handicapped. She continued to attend symphony concerts, opera performances and drama. Throughout her adult life, vacation was spent in a renovated farmhouse on Grindstone Island in the St. Lawrence River. Because of the many moves during her childhood, Anne thought of the island as more of a home than any other. She always thought of herself as a “River Rat.” Anne was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband Bob; by her children, Ted (Melina Costello) of Portland, OR, Beth (Kristen Roman) of Madison, WI, and Jon (Linda Garrett) of Brookfield, VT, and grandchildren Joe, Maia, Mead and Eric; step-grandchild Maria (Eric) and their son Alan. Siblings Andrew (Beverly) of Madison, WI, James (Edith) of Utica, N.Y., and Carol (Marshall) of Cheshire, CT, survive her, as well as many nieces and nephews; her sisters-in-law Thea (Paul) of Green Bay, WI, and Ruth (Larry) of Daly City, CA, and their offspring also survive. A MEMORIAL SERVICE is planned for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 2008 at the Presbyterian Church of the Cross, 1517 S. 114th St. The family wishes to express appreciation to the many friends who visited her regularly; to the nurses and physicians who attended to her needs throughout the years; to her loyal home-care workers who assisted her physically and buoyed her spirits. Memorials in Anne’s name may be made to Presbyterian Outreach, League of Women Voters of Greater Omaha Educational Fund, or the Thousand Island Land Trust.
