Betty Jean (Goetz) Horrum, “Theresia”

HORRUM, Betty Jean “Theresia” (Goetz) Feb 26, 1931 – Aug 28, 2014 Betty Jean was raised by loving parents, John F. and Elizabeth (Theiler) Goetz. They worked hard for the spiritual and physical well-being of their five children. Betty Jean attended Walnut Hill kindergarten and St. Cecilia grade and high school. In 1949 after graduation, she entered the Sinsinawa Dominican Order, where she served as Sister M. Theresia teaching in Kansas City, Minneapolis, Chicago, Bloomington, Illinois, South Sioux City, and Anaconda, Montana. After a year’s leave of absence teaching at St. Jude in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Theresia signed her dispensation papers from Rome in 1972. In December of 1973 she moved home to Omaha where she taught as a substitute teacher and was employed part time at J.C. Penney, then full time at H.D.R. She taught at St. Cecilia and then at Christ the King from 1976-1982. In 1979, Theresia’s pharmacist, Richard W. Horrum, began calling on her. His first wife, Mary Rita (Baldwin) died earlier that year. Dick and Theresia were married on September 29, 1979 in Our Lady of Nebraska Chapel at St. Cecilia Cathedral. With God’s grace, Dick survived many health problems. The most traumatic were three heart by-pass surgeries. All of us were grateful for Dick’s twenty-three years of added life. Dick and Theresia’s love for one another was always apparent. Theresia was most grateful for the gift of her Catholic faith, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, Blessed Mother, the Rosary, and the Little Hours from Magnificat, the family Parish of St. Gerald and for the gift of Dick’s love in marriage. Among her interests, Theresia enjoyed reading, ceramics, stitchery, quilting, the piano, the computer and with her husband’s encouragement, family history. She is survived by her stepchildren and spouses: Jennifer and Joel Snell, Julianne and Mitch Marsh, Mark and Mary Horrum, Richard and Marlyn Horrum, Matthew Horrum, Mary Joyce Horrum; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Allan and Theodora Wintersteen, Regena and Don Dean, and Lola Goetz; many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 2nd from 5pm to 7m at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 14330 Eagle Run Drive, with VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm at the church. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Wednesday, Sept. 3rd at 10:30 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Interment, St. Mary Magdalene Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Vincent de Paul Scholarship Fund.
