TROIA, Carl Joseph, M.D., Sep 12, 1923 – Oct 1, 2011. Age 88. Carl J. Troia, M.D. passed away on October 1, 2011. He was born in Omaha, NE on September 12, 1923. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sebastiano and Vincenza Troia; sister, Louise Green and her spouse Lawrence; brothers and spouses, Anthony and Eileen Troia, Joseph and Dorothy Troia; nephews, Carl Troia and Frank Troia. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Katherine; six children: son Sebastian Troia, M.D. and wife Barbara, daughter Virginia (Troia) Fusco and husband Nicholas, son Carl J. Troia Jr. and wife Cindy, son Robert Troia, M.D. and wife Carol Drake, M.D., daughter Anne Troia, and son Richard Troia and wife Kimberly; 19 grandchildren: Matthew, Christina and Nicholas Troia, Kate Fusco, Carl III (and wife Toni), Paul, and Michelle Troia, Andrew, Natalie, Wyatt and Claire Troia, Sam, Joe, John and Thomas Wilson, and Sarah, Alex, Thomas and Christian Troia; numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Troia earned his B.S. degree from Creighton University and graduated from Creighton University Medical School in 1953. He served as a physician in the U.S Army. Dr. Troia began his private medical practice as a General Practitioner in Bakersfield, CA. Thereafter, he completed his Ophthalmology Residency at Kansas City General Hospital in 1961. He studied Pediatric Ophthalmology under Dr. Frank Costenbader (the world’s first pediatric ophthalmologist) and under his mentor, Dr. Marshall Parks, in the fellowship-training program at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Troia returned to Omaha, in 1962 where he pioneered Pediatric Ophthalmology in the Omaha area and practiced for over 30 years. From 1991-1993, Dr. Troia served as the President of the Costenbader Society. Dr. Troia was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church for 49 years and was a Veteran of World War II and the Korean War. The family will receive friends Wednesday, 5pm to 7pm at Christ the King Catholic Church, with VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Thursday, 10am, Christ the King Catholic Church. Entombment, Resurrection Mausoleum, with military rites by Millard American Legion Post 374 and VFW Post 8334. Memorials are suggested to Creighton Prep, Creighton University, Children’s Eye Foundation, or Christ the King Education Fund.
