Dr. William Morris Berton

BERTON, Dr. William Morris Feb 8, 1924 – Sep 1, 2013 William Morris Berton, M.D., passed away Sunday, September 1, 2013. Dr. Berton was born in Fresno, California, the son of Walter and Winifred Haine Berton. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia C. Husbands Berton; three children: William Mark Berton, Pamela Chappell Berton-Johnson, and James Samuel Berton (Laura); five grandchildren: Duncan and Miriam Johnson, and Sara, Samuel and Teressa Berton; sister, Lynn Noren of Atherton, CA; numerous niece and nephews. Dr. Berton served in World War II and was in the USNR. In 1949 he graduated from the University of California Medical School in San Francisco. After a rotating internship in Boston, he took his Pathology training at Duke University. Following that, because of the Korean Conflict he was subject to the Doctor Draft and served two years at the U. S. Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base. He was a Professor of Pathology at the U. T. Medical School in Memphis, Tennessee, where he also served as Commandant’s Local Representative, USNR, at the Medical School. He served in the same position at UNMC for a period of time, and was a Professor of Pathology at UNMC from 1969 until his retirement in the early 90’s. He continued to serve in volunteer teaching until the Post-Polio Syndrome forced him to stop. Burial was September 7, 2013 in Florence, South Carolina. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held Saturday, September 21st at 10am at Dundee Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be sent to Dundee Presbyterian Church or UNMC Department of Pathology.
