Dwight W. “Dewey” Ehrenberg

EHRENBERG, Dwight W. “Dewey” Oct 7, 1931 – Apr 7, 2013 Dwight William “Dewey” Ehrenberg, of Omaha, Nebraska fought a brave battle with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cancer and passed away peacefully at the Josie Harper Hospice House on Sunday April 7, 2013. He was born October 7, 1931 on a farm near Creighton, Nebraska to parents George and Arietta Ehrenberg. He graduated from high school in 1948 and caught the attention of the New York Yankees farm club as catcher during the Yogi Berra/Joe DiMaggio/Mickey Mantle World Series reign. He signed with the team, but chose to enlist first with the U.S. Army and served in the 969th Engineering Construction Battalion, working near the 38th parallel in the Korean War. He met his future wife, Helen Marie Jacobs, of Omaha through her family cousin, Janie O’Donnell during the summer of 1948 while playing for the All State Baseball Team. Upon his return from military service, he decided to continue his education and earned his degree in Engineering from Omaha University (UNO). Dewey and Helen married August 28, 1954 and in 1959, he began his career with Western Electric (AT&T) as an Industrial Engineer. He served as the President of the Telephone Pioneers Organization where his volunteer work on a large Omaha renovation project for the Girls Club, Inc. was recognized. He retired from Western Electric in 1988 and enjoyed golfing for a few years before deciding to work another 20 years for Indian Creek Golf Course. Thanks to the Gottsch family and many donors and participants in the October 7, 2012 Dewey Open, over $20,000 was raised for Make a Wish and Boys Town. Dewey loved golf, Husker football, watching his grandchildren play softball and basketball and cooking and baking. His peanut brittle, peanut clusters and bourbon balls have been a long-standing Christmas tradition. He so loved his neighbors, friends, family and wife of 58 years. Dewey is preceded in death by his parents, George and Arietta; infant sister; granddaughter, Erin Elledge; and great-granddaughter, Bella Dyke. He is survived by his wife Helen; children: Steve, Jean, Linda (Tim Ingram), Susan (Richard Moulton) and Judy (Dennis Elledge); grandchildren: Anne Moulton (Nathan Dyke), Katie Moulton (Zach Jennison), Tim Ingram, Kaylin Ingram, Megan Ingram, Julia Ingram; and great-grandson, Wesley Dyke. The Ehrenberg family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at Methodist Hospital and Estabrook Cancer Center, the Josie Harper Hospice House and VNA Hospice nurses and physicians for the special care, love, dignity and respect given to Dewey and our family in these past few months. Quote from Yogi Berra: “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Quote from Dale Berra: “You can’t compare me to my father. Our similarities are different.” CELEBRATION OF LIFE Friday, April 19 at 6pm at the West Center Chapel. MEMORIAL MASS Saturday, April 20 at 10am at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.
