E. F. “Ed” Maaske died Wednesday, July 10, at Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs at age 99 years, six months and five days. He was born on Monday evening, January 5, 1914 at the Frank Latta farm on the Willow, in Magnolia Township, Harrison County, IA. Ed was the ninth of 12 siblings. He was baptized with sister Edna Mae at a Mission fest, probably an English service, at Zion Lutheran Church, Magnolia. They were confirmed with Harold McBride as the first class instructed at the newly organized Immanuel Lutheran Church, Logan, in 1931. He attended school at the Magnolia Consolidated School and completed eighth grade at Willow Valley No. 4. Ed attended high school at Magnolia, Logan and Omaha Technical High School. As a young man he had a variety of jobs from age 11. From 1937-1941 he was employed at the Harrison County Cooperative Creamery, and from 1941-1945 he was a machinist at the Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant in Omaha. He started farming in 1946 and began in the auction business after training in 1948. He began as a real estate salesman with H.L. Peyton in Logan, and when he was licensed as a broker, opened the office of E.F. Maaske Real Estate and Auctioneer from his home at Beebeetown. Ed sold many sales on his own, but partnered through the years with Clifford Anderson and Everett Gochenour and sons and occasionally with other local auctioneers. He held various church offices including chairman of Immanuel Lutheran Church during pastoral vacancies. Ed taught a second-grade Sunday School class in the 1960s and followed his students as they grew older. He was a director of Linnwood School District 9 in La Grange Township and was elected to the Board of the Logan-Magnolia Community Schools at the time of the reorganization in the early 1960s and served a term as chairman. He also was appointed to several boards of real estate appraisal and tax review. Ed was an officer at the Logan Meal Site during the many years he attended there. Ed enjoyed community celebrations. He attended Old Settler’s at Magnolia from age 5 and the July Fourth celebrations in Logan from age 11 through 2013. He entered parades as a clown because he thought every parade should have at least one clown. He was acquainted with people from a wide area and was a resource for local human interest history as he grew older. On his birthday in 1941 Edgar and Mildred Jeannette Killpack were married at the Lutheran Parsonage in Logan. They lived in Logan, Council Bluffs, at the Killpack family farm south of Beebeetown, and in 1949 purchased the farm from Albert and Helen Wehrli which became the family home.
