Gene Evans

LEWIS E. “GENE” EVANS, age 82, of Logan, Iowa passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Gene was born March 10, 1928 in Wales, Iowa to Garvin and Leah Evelyn (Lewis) Evans. Gene graduated from Wales Lincoln High School. He earned his Bachelor Degree from Simpson College and his Masters Degree from UNO. Gene was married to Marselene “Marcie” Darlene Mumm July 25, 1953 in Red Oak. They remained at Wales for two years and then moved to Logan. Gene came to Logan-Magnolia in 1955 as a social studies and English teacher. He coached girls and boys basketball, junior high football and track. He served as the athletic director form 1961 to 1964. In 1964, he left Logan for a position in Everly, Iowa. He returned to Logan in 1967 as Superintendent, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. During his service as superintendent, a new junior-senior high school building was constructed. During his last stint at Logan-Magnolia, he taught psychology and was the high school girls’ basketball and softball coach for seven years. Gene was named a recipient of the School Administrators Award when he retired. He served in the field of education for 39 years as a teacher, coach, athletic director, principle and superintendent for 22 out of those years. He served on the Logan-Magnolia Board of Education from 1994 to 2000. Gene served as the interim Superintendent for the Oakland, Iowa school system for one year, he also coached girls basketball in Missouri Valley for a couple of years. Gene was still volunteering his time to start the elementary track and field meet held each spring. Gene was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, an organization in which children are the top priority, a philosophy Gene embraced throughout his educational career. Survivors include his son: Gregory and wife Pam both of Logan, Iowa; daughter: Debra Kuhlmann and husband Roger of Missouri Valley, Iowa; grandson: Rowdy Evans and wife Jan; great-grandchildren: Maren and Sage of Mondamin, Iowa; grandson: Jamie Evans and wife Kelly and great-granddaughter: Amelia of Logan, Iowa; grandson: Keegan Kuhlmann currently of Denver, Colorado; granddaughter: Kenzie Kuhlmann of Missouri Valley, Iowa sisters-in-law: Kathy Nelson and husband John of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Betty Ashworth and husband Harold, Joyce Lenon of Omaha, Nebraska; Erika Mumm of Kimberly, Idaho; many relatives and friends. Gene was preceded in death by his wife Marcie of 56 years, parents, brothers-in-law, Carl and wife Kathy Mumm, Willard Mumm, LeRoy Mumm, Marvin Lenon. Memorials may be given to the Logan Fire & Rescue or Lo-Ma Booster club.
