HOLYOKE, Dr. Edward A., Jr. “Ted”

Edward A. “Ted” Holyoke, Jr., M.D. Jan 5, 1943 – Oct 25, 2015 Ted Holyoke died peacefully on October 25, 2015, after a long bout with cancer. He was born in Omaha on January 5, 1943, to Dr. Edward A. and Lois C. Holyoke. He graduated in 1961 from Benson High School and then from the University of Omaha, finishing with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1970 from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He interned at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver and began his practice in Ogallala, where he spent the next seventeen years as a family practitioner. On December 30, 1966, he married Sharon Ann Bonham in Franklin, Nebraska. They had three children: Mary Virginia, Ann Christine, and Megan Lee. A caring and personable physician, Ted especially loved treating children. He could make any kid smile. He was a dedicated participant in the University Medical Center’s rural residency program and mentored many young physicians. He left Ogallala in 1988 and practiced in Omaha until his retirement in 2003. He was recognized by his peers as a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practitioners and as a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. For six years he served as a Battalion Surgeon in the Nebraska National Guard. He was exceptionally proud of his wife’s career as a nursing instructor at the University’s College of Nursing. Ted was an avid skier and loved being at the family condo in Vail with his wife, daughters, and friends. He was an accomplished musician on the piano and organ and served as the organist at various churches for decades. As a person of great faith, he particularly enjoyed his Bible study group and was grateful for the members’ support and caring during his illness. Ted leaves a gap in the hearts and minds of his loved ones and many friends. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter, Ann C. Lambert (George) and their daughter Alyssa, of Cozad, NE; brother, Tom Holyoke (Carol) of Scottsbluff; brother-in-law, Jim Bonham (Ann); extended family, Drs. Burt and Pam McKeag of Kearney; numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by daughter, Mary Virginia; infant daughter, Megan Lee; parents, Dr. Edward A. Holyoke and Lois C. Holyoke. VISITATION Thursday, October 29th, from 5pm to 7pm at the West Center Chapel. SERVICES Friday, October 30th at 10:30am at Christ Community Church, 404 S. 108 Ave. At Ted’s request, his remains have been cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to University of Nebraska Foundation Medical Student Scholarship Fund, or to the Hastings College Foundation Mary Virginia Holyoke McKeag Scholarship Fund.
