In Loving Memory Of James S. Hanks November 23, 1926 October 19, 2010 The family would like to invite everyone to lunch and fellowship at the Nealy Hall in Little Sioux. Hanks, age 83, of Missouri Valley, Iowa passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2010 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, surrounded by his wife and family. Jim was born November 23, 1926 in Ida Grove, Iowa to Monroe and Rachel (Little) Hanks. Jim enlisted into the United States Navy during the winter of 1944, before being sent to the U.S. Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill. During the spring of 1945, Jim was assigned to the USS Puget Sound as one of the ship’s helmsmen, reaching the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. On the USS Puget Sound, Jim left San Diego on September 8, 1945 for brief training in the Hawaiian Islands before proceeding to support the occupation of Japan. He completed his military service and returned to Iowa in the spring of 1946. He was recognized by the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs and Iowa Department of Education in 2010 with an honorary high school diploma for courageously sacrificing his own high school education to protect our nation. In 1950, Jim was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa. On February 25, 1950, he married Mary McDaniel in Ute, Iowa. To this union, three wonderful daughters were born. They celebrated sixty years together last February. Jim loved fishing, farming, hunting, gardening and family. James was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Patricia King, son-in-law Rodney Johnson; brothers; Earl, Dale, Louis, Walter, Gilbert and Wayne and sister Dolsie. James is survived by his wife Mary of Missouri Valley, IA; daughters; Susan (Dale) Baak of Holstein, IA, Jane (Stan) Hinkel of Castana, IA, son-in-law Larry (Donna) King of Missouri Valley, IA; grandchildren; Lisa (Randy) Steffen of Charter Oak, IA, Eric Johnson and partner Mark Parker of Texas, Scott (Mia) Johnson of California, Ryan (Keri) King of Mondamin, IA, Kyle (Erin) King of Ankeny, IA, Reagan (Ben) Barry of Norwalk, IA; thirteen great grandchildren, one more due in November; brother; Jerry (Donna) Hanks of Onawa, IA, sisters; Etta and Rosella Chasteen both of Oregon; sisters-in-law; Kathryn Hanks of Onawa, IA, Dorothy Hanks of Quimby, Joanne Hanks of Nebraska; many nieces and nephews and friends.
