Lloyd W. Kilmer Nov 17, 1920 – Jan 6, 2016 Surprise, Arizona – Lloyd was born in Grand Meadow, Minnesota and raised in Stewartville, Minnesota by parents Maude and Frank Kilmer. He is survived by wife Ruth; sons and daughter-in-law, Frank Kilmer of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Lloyd and Georgie Kilmer of Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren: Jacquelyn of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Reid and Blake Kilmer of Elkhorn, Nebraska, and Shauna Diller of Davis, California; great-granddaughter, Kaylynn Mailloux of Elkhorn, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by grandson, John Kilmer; wife, Marie; and brothers Harold, Eugene and Larry Kilmer. As a young man he met Marie Beckwith, a student nurse at Koehler Nursing School (Mayo Clinic), whom he later married; together, they established a family with in Omaha. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII, serving as a B-24 pilot with the 8th Air Force in the European Theater. He flew sixteen missions and was shot down over Holland but successfully crash landed his aircraft with no injuries to the crew. He and his crew were taken as prisoners of war at Stalag Luft III; all survived and returned to the United States. Upon his return to civilian life, he and Marie moved to Omaha where Lloyd attended Creighton University. After earning a degree in business, he worked in the real estate and savings and loan business. He served his community though service on the Boards of St. Paul Methodist Church, Nebraska Methodist Hospital, the Crowell Home, the Boy Scouts and other organizations. In addition, Lloyd was elected and served as the Douglas County Clerk in Omaha for two terms and remained active in Republican Party activities, Rotary, Scottish Rite and the American Legion. After moving to the Phoenix area in retirement, Lloyd was very active, along with his wife Ruth, with the American Legion, Ex-Prisoners of War, VFW, DAV and other veterans’ activities. After being included in Tom Brokaw’s 2000 book “The Greatest Generation” and subsequent NBC program, Lloyd spoke to countless groups across the country about his war experience and service to his country. He was inducted as a member of the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame in 2004. Lloyd enjoyed the outdoors and hunting with his friends, from the corn fields of Nebraska to the wilderness of Canada. He enjoyed attending University of Nebraska football games and spending vacation time with Beckwith family members. He supported his sons’ activities throughout school and was a strong advocate for higher education. Lloyd will be missed by all for his love, loyalty and commitment to friends, family and country.
