McGILL, Gertrude Ann “Nan”

Gertrude Ann “Nan” McGill Jun 16, 1926 – Mar 9, 2016 Gertrude Ann “Nan” Sullivan McGill was born in O’Neill, Nebraska to Patrick and Anna Sullivan on June 16, 1926. She was the oldest of four children (Ray, Peggy and Gene). Her younger brother could not say “Gertrude Ann” instead calling her “Nan.” In 1943, she graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in O’Neill and later, in 1950, moved to Omaha where she worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. Nan began as a telephone operator and was promoted to a supervisor after six months. Soon after, Nan was transferred to the Directory department, travelling in Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota selling advertising for the Yellow Pages. Nan married John McGill on October 23, 1954. She had a late-term miscarriage, losing their son on November 25, 1956 and nearly dying in the ordeal. Nan and John went on to adopt four children from Catholic Charities over the next 12 years: Joan Elizabeth on December 24, 1957, Maureen Ann on February 15, 1962, John Robert on September 17, 1965, and Jeff Michael on December 17, 1969. Her loving husband, John McGill, passed away at age 66 on December 17, 1995. A member of St. James Catholic Church since 1963, Nan joined the Legion of Mary in 2002, visiting nursing homes, leading the Rosary, and distributing Holy Communion as an EME. With Nan’s health declining during the last four years, Dr. Klein remarked that “Gertrude was truly his most elegant patient.” Her life was focused on her children and ten grandchildren. She was kind, very gentle, and greatly loved by all. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. “Big John” McGill; brother, Raymond Sullivan; sister, Peggy Jansen. Survived by children: Joan Malouf, Maureen Morrison, Jack McGill, and Jeff McGill (Melissa); ten grandchildren; brother, Gene Sullivan (Hilda). The family will receive friends Sunday, March 13th, from 2pm to 3pm at St. James Catholic Church, with VIGIL SERVICE at 3pm at the church. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Monday, March 14th at 10am at St. James Catholic Church. Interment, Hillcrest Memorial Park. Memorials will be directed by the family.
