Ruth E. Williams

Ruth Emmaretta Burnham Williams, age 94 of Logan, Iowa, passed away, Saturday August 3, 2013 at Westmont Care Center in Logan, Iowa. Ruth was born November 26, 1918 to Henry Warren Burnham and Bessie Aten Burnham in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her childhood was spent in Sholes, Nebraska where she attended the Sholes Elementary school. After Ruth’s family move to Wayne, Nebraska, she attended Wayne High School and graduated in 1936. She attended the University of Nebraska, specializing in elementary education, and taught in Blue Hill, Nebraska, and Chadron, Nebraska. Ruth spent six years during World War 2 in Washington, D.C. where she was employed by the Navy department, Bureau of Ships. When the United Nations was established in New York City in March, 1946 Ruth was sent on loan from the Navy Dept. to set up the Personnel records of all the employees. She worked closely with the finance officer to ensure that all employees received a pay-check on the first United Nations pay-day, and finally she trained an employee to continue maintaining these records after she returned to Washington D.C. Ruth married Lyle Williams on June 3, 1950 in Ashland, Nebraska. They lived in Ashland where Lyle was engaged in farming. They moved to the Logan area in March, 1956 where Lyle continued to farm until he retired in 1981 and moved into Logan. They had one son, Bradley. Lyle passed away on June 6, 1999. Ruth worked for over ten years at Perfection Learning Corp, in Logan, Iowa and retiring in 1988. She was a member of the Logan United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, Delvers Study Club, and the United Methodist Women. She was active in the Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for several years. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Lyle Williams, brothers; Glen Burnham, Len Burnham, John Burnham, sisters; Bernice Heverely, Velma Vickery, Mary Burnham, and Ethel Burnham, and Carol Stuckney. She is survived by her son Brad of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and grandson Luke Williams. An Eastern Star Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday with funeral service to follow at the United Methodist Church in Logan, Iowa. Fiinal Resting Place will be Harris Grove Cemetery, Logan.
