MAGRUDER, Thomas Garland III, M.D. Jul 20, 1929 Dec 31, 2011 Age 82 years; passed away at home from cancer. Born in Kansas City, MO, Dr. Magruder was the son of Allene Magruder of White Sulphur Springs, West VA, and Thomas Garland Magruder, Jr. of Washington, D.C. Dr. Magruder graduated from Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, VA in 1947. He attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and then transferred to Hastings College in Hastings, NE for pre-med studies. While attending Hastings College, he met his wife, Virginia L. Boom. Tom and Virginia were married on Jan 27, 1951 in Hastings. In 1956 he graduated with honors from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. While there he was elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, a national scholastic honorary medical society. Dr. Magruder was a Lieutenant in the Navy, attached first to the Seventh Fleet in the Pacific and later to the Naval Air Station on Whidbey Island, WA. He returned to Omaha in 1959 and went into family practice with Dr. Milton Waldbaum. For over 40 years he was associated with Douglas County Hospital, where he had a special relationship with his patients. In addition to Virginia, his wife of 61 years, Dr. Magruder is survived by children, Dr. Thomas Garland Magruder IV and wife Mary Alice, and Martha Magruder, all of Omaha; 5 grandchildren: Rob and Matthew Meiman, Thomas Garland V, Molly, and Jonathan Magruder; sister, Jane McCartney of Atlanta, GA; 2 great-grandchildren, Ann Marie Meiman and Connor Steven Magruder. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Ann; sister, Ruth. SERVICES Friday, 11am, St. Luke United Methodist Church, 11810 Burke St. Private Family Graveside Service, Evergreen Memorial Park with military rites by Benson VFW Post 2503. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke United Methodist Church or Douglas County Hospital Patient Fund.
