TOFTNESS, Carol Wright

Carol Wright Toftness Oct 3, 1940 – May 25, 2016 Carol lived a remarkable life brimming with many passions, including family, friends, causes, hobbies, continuing education, and interests. Born in North Platte, Nebraska, into an extended family of do-gooders, she often accompanied her mother and grandmothers as they handed out refreshments to soldiers coming through the North Platte Canteen. When she was a teenager, the family moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where she honed her discussion skills as a member of the debate team and National Honor Society. Never one to turn down adventure, she posed for a Union Pacific Calendar and postcard, worked summers at the Yellowstone Lodge, and attended Midland College far away from her family. She married Warren Hansen, and they returned to Pocatello where Victoria and Robert were born, and then moved to Seattle where Christine was born. She moved to Omaha as a single mother with three small children, making the arduous trek east in a 1967 Mustang in the middle of July. Once there, she worked, married Richard Toftness, and added Joshua to their growing family. The family later moved near Washington, DC for a year, and later to Overland Park, Kansas. As a landscape architect, Carol’s green thumb and knowledge of horticulture guided those less inclined to achieve a more verdant environment. While in Kansas, she returned to school to study Theology and Women’s Studies at Avila College across the state line in Missouri. After graduating, Carol worked for Midwest Bioethics/Center for Practical Bioethics, Midwest Lutheran Ministries, and then for the Girl Scouts Organization. She moved back to Omaha to be near her parents in 1995. She was an ardent supporter of Women’s Rights and Planned Parenthood, and made several trips to rural Mississippi to support underserved communities there. Carol enjoyed traveling, embraced new experiences and made dear friends in New York, Ireland, and France. She leaves behind her children, Victoria Coyle, Robert Hansen, Christine Adcock, Joshua Toftness, and their families, and many friends, new and old. The family would like to acknowledge the Cardiac Care Team at Methodist Hospital, and the special staff at the Josie Harper Hospice House. SERVICES Saturday, May 28th at 12:30pm at the Mortuary, 5108 F St. Interment, Bohemian Cemetery. In accordance with Carol’s wishes, the family asks that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Girl Scouts of America, or Planned Parenthood.
