John F. Cambridge

John F. Cambridge

January 11, 1957 – September 25, 2024

CELEBRATION OF LIFE: Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at the West Center Chapel.

John F. Cambridge passed away on September 25, 2024 after a long and valiant battle with cancer.

John was born on January 11, 1957, in St. Louis, Missouri.  The family settled in Omaha and John graduated from Burke High School in 1975.  John also met his wife, Julie, in high school and they married on July 24, 1976.  Together they raised one daughter, Leia.

John was known for his loyalty and calm, diplomatic nature.  He made friends everywhere, even on his daily commute to work on the city bus.  He worked for 30 years as a Parts Manager at Ron Olsen Dodge and Baxter before joining the Federal Public Defender’s Office, where he served for 15 years in Administration and as a Panel Attorney Administrator.

John also enjoyed many creative pursuits and encouraged and appreciated the creativity of others.  He loved silversmithing and made many rings for “his girls” who included a long list of family members and friends.  He also had an appreciation for pottery, books, comic books, and cars, and loved to share his enthusiasm with others.  John opened his home to many and was a friend to all, often using humor and wit to keep others smiling.

John had fond memories of his fishing trips to Canada, and in the words of his friend, Doug Rice, we believe “there is a boundless Canadian lake, sparkling in the morning sunlight, inviting John to cast off and be unencumbered by any limits on the number of fish he can catch.”

John was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Cambridge; father, James S. Cambridge; brother, Jeff Cambridge.  He is survived by  his wife, Julie Cambridge; daughter, Leia Brown (Mike); grandchildren, Fiona and Frankie; sister, Mary Higgins (Kevin); brothers, Dan Cambridge (Brenda) and James A. Cambridge; stepsister, Sandy Sinner; and many nieces and nephews.

Tim and I are so very sorry for your loss. John was truly a gentle soul who brought joy to so many. Take comfort in knowing he is with the Lord now and will no longer suffer. We will offer prayers of comfort for Julie, Leia and family.

    Julie and Leía,
My most profound sympathy. I would like to tell you about a connection that only he and I shared. Our office doors were about 20’ apart. I quite often would bring pictures of my granddaughter Gwyneth to the office and John was the first person I showed them to. His smile showed me that he genuinely enjoyed seeing the pictures and me sharing them with him. He told me when Leía was pregnant. I shared his happiness with a huge hug. He showed me the many pictures of Fiona that he brought to the office. We were a couple of proud grandpas. The world is a better place because of John Cambridge.
    All my love
    Shannon O’Conn
