Raymond N. “Nick” McDermott, Jr.

August 20, 1933 – July 5, 2022

Retired from Mutual of Omaha after 38 years.  Preceded in death by parents, Raymond and Cecilia.  Survived by wife, Roberta; children: Kathleen Andre (Mike), Michael (Dotty), Patrick (Debbie), Ann McDermott, William, Colleen McDermott, John (Karen); 7 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Ann Dobrovolny (John) and Sr. Patricia McDermott.

Family will receive friends Friday, July 8, 2022 from 4-6PM at West Center Chapel with VIGIL SERVICE at 6PM.  MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Saturday, July 9, 2022, 10AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2110 S. 32nd Ave.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery with military honors.

Memorials are suggested to the Siena/Francis House or Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.


Raymond N McDermott, Jr “Nick” was born August 20, 1933 to Raymond, Sr and Cecilia McDermott in Omaha, Nebraska.

Nick lived his entire life in Omaha attending St. Cecilia’s grade school, Creighton Prep Highschool, graduating in 1951 and Creighton University, graduating in 1958. Nick served in the army as a military policeman in Germany for 2 years being honorably discharged in 1955.

Nick met the love of his life, Roberta, in 1957, being introduced by their friends, Pat and Cathy Ward. They went on to wed on November 15, 1958 at St. Peter’s Church. The following year they had the first of their seven children, Kathy, followed in quick succession Mike, Pat, Ann, Bill, Colleen and John.

Nick began his career at United of Omaha where he would work for 38 years, retiring as Director of Life Underwriting. After retirement, Nick and Roberta enjoyed many years of travel, seeing much of the United States and many countries of the world.

Nick enjoyed playing bridge, poker and he enjoyed his horse races. He was an avid Creighton Bluejay men’s basketball fan and held seats to the games for many years. He also enjoyed Nebraska and Notre Dame football.

Nick never knew a stranger but never remembered names, everyone was “buddy” or “babe”.

Nick was blessed with a loving family; his wife of 63 years Roberta, his seven children, his seven grandchildren: Daniel (Melissa) Shannon, Kari (Brandon), Ryan, Brianne, Ava and Max and his great grandchildren Ella and Matthew; his daughter in laws Debbie, Dotty and Karen and son in law Mike. He is also survived by his two sisters, Mary Ann and Patricia and many nephews and nieces.

Nick will be remembered by his family and friends as a man of faith and a proud Irishman.
