Joe Kun, 75, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2023, after a brief battle with cancer. Joe was born to Joseph and Phyllis Kun, on March 14, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Growing up, he enjoyed spending time with his cousins, who were like siblings to him. The high school distributive education program he participated in led him on his path to a career in retail.

Joe was managing the shoe department at Seifert’s Women’s Apparel in Cedar Rapids when he met the love of his life, Karen, manager of their Young, Iowa Shop. They wed on July 3, 1970. The couple moved to St. Louis when Joe was promoted to shoe buyer. His career in Omaha was primarily as Divisional Merchandise Manager at Richman Gordman, followed by research and consulting with The Gordman Group. Joe was fondly referred to as “Shoe Dawg.”

In his younger years, Joe enjoyed golf, softball, bowling, and working in his vegetable garden to unwind after a long day at the office. He also enjoyed grilling and playing cribbage and backgammon. He was rarely found without a newspaper or book within arm’s reach.

In his retirement, Joe enjoyed simple pleasures. His happy place was being at home with his family, sitting on the deck or in his recliner with a good book.

Joe was a thinker and a man of few words. Raising two daughters and being the only male in the house often tested his patience, but he navigated it calmly.  Those he loved, he loved intensely and with generous support.

Joe and Karen were blessed with two daughters, Kelley Kun (James Mackiewicz) and Kristy Kun (Christian Burchard); four amazing grandchildren: Nicholas, Jacob and, Kyle Vincentini, Olivia McLeod.
