Adam Brandon Smith, M.D.

SMITH, Adam Brandon, M.D., age 33, loving husband, father, son, and physician passed away on August 11, 2010 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born March 18, 1977 in Hanford, California. Adam was a graduate of Sierra High School in 1995. Following high school he served a two year mission in Guatemala for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He graduated from California State University, Fresno in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology. He graduated from Creighton University School of Medicine in 2006. Adam completed his intern year in Internal Medicine at Creighton University Medical Center and was in his last year of his four year Radiology Residency which he would have completed in June, 2011. He had accepted a Fellowship in Body Imaging at M.D. Anderson Medical Center in Houston, Texas to begin July 2011. He had a passion for medicine and serving others. An associate was quoted as saying that not only has the world lost a loving husband and father but one of its great medical minds. Adam would surely have gone on to serve as one of our top radiologists. Adam was killed on Wednesday, August 11th, while taking his children Justin (8) and Spencer (2) home from a special daddy/son first day of school breakfast—a tradition Adam had started years ago. While en route home at 8am, less than a mile from his home, a 27 year old man lost control of his car, jumped the center median and collided with Adam’s car head-on. The man had a blood alcohol level almost four times the legal limit. He survived with minor injuries. Adam was killed instantly while his sons, though conscious throughout the ordeal, suffered major injuries. Justin suffered a broken clavicle and rib. Spencer suffered a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain in two spots, broken orbital socket and facial bones, both femurs were broken (he is in a full lower body cast), broken clavicle and numerous contusions. They are expected to recover. They were both in car seats and Adam was wearing his seat belt. Both airbags deployed. They estimate the other driver was traveling around 65 mph when he hit Adam head-on. When rescuers approached the car Justin and Spencer were removed from the car because it appeared to be ready to catch fire. Fire extinguishers were used. Adam had to be cut out of the car (as was the other driver). Justin asked the person that extricated him if his daddy was dead, as he had seen the affects of the impact. Adam had many talents and interests that extended beyond medicine. He loved the outdoors and even more so when he was camping, hiking and fishing with his sons. They adored their father, as he did them. Despite the long hours and sacrifice he and Melissa endured to complete their education, over so many years, he always put his family first. His dedication to medicine was only exceeded by his love for his family and his faith in God. The world has lost a great doctor but, even more so, it has lost an incredibly loving husband, father and servant of his Heavenly Father. Despite the fact that Adam and Melissa were so close to having accomplished one of their goals that they had worked so long and hard to achieve, only to have it taken away by poor choices of another person, Melissa and her family continue to exercise faith in their Heavenly Father and His plan for us. Adam is survived by his wife of ten and one-half years, Melissa Malan Smith, sons Justin (8 yrs), Spencer (2 yrs.), and Carson (5 months), parents Richard and Pamela Smith of Tollhouse, California, brothers Charles (and wife Jennifer) of Hebron, Ohio, Matthew of Los Angeles, California, and Douglas, Jordan, and Parker of Tollhouse, California. Parents- in-law Mark and Yvonne Malan of Crystal Lake, Illinois, brother-in-law Jonathan (and wife Alyson) Malan of Provo, Utah, Kara Malan of Rexburg, Idaho, and Matthew Malan of Crystal Lake, Illinois. Also surviving Adam are grandparents, Harold and Marjorie Carling of Chico, California, and Kirk and Mary Malan of Fresno, California. SERVICES Tuesday, 10am, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints/Papillion Stake, 12009 So. 84 St. Private Interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Adam B. Smith Memorial Fund c/o the funeral home; or log on to www.adamsmithmemorial.com.
