Alberta R. Bethke Ewer, 94-years 7 months, passed March 5, 2022, in Omaha, Nebraska.  She was born July 28, 1927, in Richland Center, Wisconsin to Albert and Ferne (Lint) Bethke.  She was raised on family farms until her family moved to Whittier, California in 1944.  Alberta graduated in 1945 from Whittier Union High School in Whittier, CA.  She completed two years of college at York College, York, Nebraska where she studied music and teaching.  While working for Pacific Tel & Tel Co. in Whittier, CA, she attended Court Reporting School.  As a court reporter for United States Air Force, Civil Service Department, she was assigned to bases in Japan and Azores Islands, Portugal from 1954 – 1958.  During this time, she traveled throughout Japan and Europe as her desire was to see the world.  While in the Azores, Alberta met her husband, Jack L. Ewer.  They married on June 29, 1957, in Onawa, Iowa and were married 63 years until his passing in February 2020.  They returned to the United States in 1961 and lived in Mountain Home, Idaho, Rapid City, South Dakota, Chadron, Nebraska, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Omaha and Loup City, Nebraska.  She was a full-time mother and wife during her four children’s school years.  She went back to work as a switchboard operator at Lutheran Medical Center in Omaha for 20 years before retiring.

Alberta was a member most recently of Benson Baptist Church, Omaha, NE and United Methodist Church, Loup City, NE.  She taught Sunday School and adult Bible Studies throughout her life using her experiences from travels in her lessons.

Alberta’s interests included traveling where she lived (Japan & Azores), meeting people who became life-long friends.  She toured many of the European countries along with all 48 continental United States.  She was a prolific letter writer, an expert level crossword puzzle and Scrabble player even with her dementia.

Alberta is survived by her four children: Carolyn Killion (Robert)of Laguna Niguel, California, David Ewer (Karra) of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Christine Ewer of Omaha, NE, Michael Ewer (Elizabeth) of Omaha, NE; five grandchildren: Ashley Amante of Loup City, NE, Kenneth Ewer (Amanda) of Sterling, Virginia, Keia Jensen (Dave) of Omaha, NE, Heather Ewer of Omaha, NE, Kaylee Ewer of Omaha, NE; three great-grandchildren: Soren and Gunner Jensen of Omaha, NE, Eliana Ewer of Sterling, VA; many beloved nieces and nephews and their families from both the Bethke and Ewer families.

Alberta was preceded in death by parents, Albert and Ferne Bethke; husband, Jack L. Ewer; sisters: Floss Pratt (Theron), Anne Martin; Lois Anderson (Gay); brother, John “Jack” Bethke.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Immanuel Fontenelle Nursing Home for their compassionate care of Alberta Ewer.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 11:00am at Sunset Hills Baptist Church, 9416 Pacific Street, Omaha, NE with visitation preceding the service from 10:00am to 10:50am.  Private Family Burial: Monday, March 14, 2022, at Pleasanton Cemetery, Pleasanton, NE.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to The Salvation Army https://give.salvationarmyusa.org/give , Immanuel Foundation, 6809 N. 68th Plaza, Omaha, NE 68152, or a charity of your choice.
