Aletha “Jeanne” Throckmorton

Jul 16, 1920 – Jan 1, 2018

Aletha Jeanne Huitt Throckmorton, age 97, of Omaha, NE, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 1, 2018. She was born July 16, 1920 in Shell Rock, IA, to William and Iva (Whitcomb) Huitt. Jeanne was married to Richard Mayo Throckmorton on Nov. 30, 1940 in Atlantic, IA. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Terry (Judith Ann) Throckmorton, Dick (Patricia) Throckmorton, Kevin (Missy) Throckmorton, and Cindy (Jim) Bruggeman; her youngest sister, Marjorie (Bob) Van Camp; 17 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Besides being a housewife and mother, Jeanne worked at several jobs outside of the home. She and Richard ran Scotty’s Chicken Inn in Ames, IA for several years and Dick and Jeanne’s, a hotel/gas station/cafe in Jefferson, IA. Later, in Carroll, IA, she typed up driver’s licenses with the highway patrol and was the assistant librarian with the Carroll library.

Jeanne first learned to drive in 1953 in the family’s 1949 Chrysler, and she was more than willing to turn in her driver’s license when it expired as they moved from Denver to Omaha, on her birthday, 53 years later.

Jeanne was involved in many charitable and community organizations. She was a cub scout leader and a den mother while her sons were involved in Boy Scouts, as well as a Brownie leader for Cindy. Jeanne was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 66 years, joining in Nov. 1951 and received her Diamond Circle at the 60-year mark. She was a 54-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was initiated March 7, 1964 into Signet Chapter #41 in Carroll, IA. She affiliated with Friendship Chapter #137 in Arvada, CO in 1988, which affiliated with Mt Zion Chapter #133 in 2008.

Jeanne enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, crocheting, wood carving, candle making, and painting (both oils and watercolors). She leaves behind many wonderful paintings, most of which can be seen in her children’s homes.

Jeanne remained young-at-heart right to the end. She had a wonderful sense of humor, always had a smile, and loved to laugh.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 5th from 5pm to 7pm at the West Center Chapel, 7805 W. Center Rd., Omaha, followed by EASTERN STAR SERVICE at 7pm.  VISITATION at First Christian Church in Panora, Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 6th from 10am to 11am, followed by SERVICES at 11am.  Interment, West Cemetery in Panora.  Memorials to Nebraska Eastern Star.

Jeanne and I had a special bond when I learned that she spent much of World War II at Panora, where my grandparents are buried. I was writing a beautiful but complicated story that started when a man in England wrote to the Mayor of Ames inquiring about his cousin’s visit to Ames during the war. The story unraveled and involved Richard Throckmorton’s British friend’s friend — the man’s cousin. I was having a delightful conversation with Jeanne on the phone when I asked, “Where did you spend the war?” I later met Jeanne and Richard in Ames and later stopped to visit with them in Aurora, Colorado. They were a wonderful couple. My wife Anita and I were so glad that their life paths cross ours. — Wayne R. Beal, Green Valley, Arizona, wrbeal@aol.com
