Alice M. Packard

Alice M. Packard

November 16, 1939 – December 10, 2024

Alice Marie West was born November 16, 1939, to Myron and Sue West in Omaha Nebraska. She grew up north of downtown Omaha on 18th Street, where she graduated in 1958 from Technical High School. She found love in a local neighborhood pharmacy where she met a young man who worked behind the soda fountain. She courted and then married Riley Packard August 15, 1959. Their first home together was in the Strehlow Terrace apartments on North 16th Street. While Riley attended Pharmacy School at Creighton University, Alice attended school at Capitol Beauty School. Alice worked in the hair salon on the 10th floor of the Brandeis Building downtown.

On 1961, Alice gave birth to her first son, Doug, and three days later, Alice was by Riley’s side as he graduated from Pharmacy School. The young family moved to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, where they lived for two years. While in San Antonio, their first daughter, Denise Packard, was born in 1962. After fulfilling their duties in the US Army, Riley and Alice wanted to move closer to family, so they moved to Hastings, Nebraska. In 1965 an opportunity opened for Riley in Omaha, so the family moved to a home in the Prairie Hills Rockbrook neighborhood. The next year, 1966, Alice gave birth to their third child, Susan Packard.

Alice always loved looking at houses and one house she had her eye on came up for sale in 1977. Six months after giving birth to her last child, Sam Packard, the family moved one last time to a house in Bridgeford Rockbrook neighborhood. She lived in that house for the past 47, years until her death.

Alice was a fantastic homemaker. Later in life after she helped out at the family drugstore, Medicap Pharmacy. She would bring Riley lunch every day and tend to the store while he ate. She was his strength in good and bad economic times. She created relationships with those she met at the drug store.

Alice had multiple hobbies. She loved to cook, bake, and host dinner parties, sew, crochet, tie blankets. and decorate her house inside and out. There was never a holiday small enough that did not deserve decorations. Later in life, she loved the thrill of the antique hunt going to stores and estates sales looking for must have items.

Alice was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in many capacities through the years, impacting many people’s lives. Whether teaching four-year-olds the gospel, teaching young women about hair styles, or standing guard in the church’s library, Alice loved to serve her Heavenly Father.

Alice loved family. She wore many hats within the family; cook, tailor, nurse, taxi driver, peacemaker, judge, counselor, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

She will be missed here on earth but know that she is happily reunited with Riley and others who passed through the veil before her.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Myron and Sue West; sister, Laura Hogan; husband, Riley Packard; daughter, Susan Brink; and grandsons, Zachary Brink and Paul Packard.

Alice is survived by children, Doug Packard (Sharon), Denise Packard, and Sam Packard (Sarah); grandchildren: Joshua, Stephanie, Nathan, Everett, Jacob, Matthew, Samantha, Noah, Elliot, and Lily; and eight great-grandchildren.

Alice was one of a kind! She might have been small of stature; but her personality and heart were anything but! I feel grateful for fond memories of her and the whole Packard family.

I was thinking about Alice several days ago and wondering how she was doing. I’m sad to hear of her passing. I was one of her visiting teachers for some time many years ago. Alice never failed at welcoming us, and uplifting us with her positivity.. Condolences to her loved ones.
