Allen L. Mefford
July 14, 1953 – January 9, 2023
Allen L. Mefford of Omaha, NE, passed away on January 9, 2023, at Newport House in Omaha. Without complaining, Allen fought a courageous battle against his illness.
Allen was born July 14, 1953, in Denver, CO, to Donald and Joyce (Fraser) Mefford. Allen graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1972. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Scouts’ Order of the Arrow.
Allen graduated from Omaha Art School in 1975. He worked as a Commercial Artist and Professional Photographer in various places such as Brandies, Arnold Clark Studios, and Epson Lithograph until 2002. Allen then ran his own business, “At Your Service Handyman,” until 2020. He was a tinkerer par excellence. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix. He mowed lawns in the summer and pushed snow in the winter with a shovel.
Allen was not a cheap man; he was a frugal man. He could write a book on how to live within your means. No matter what he made, he was always able to save money. Allen was a friend to many. He loved to go fishing, and he loved the great outdoors. He also loved to go thrift shopping. If there was a yard sale, he’d stop and check it out. Some of his best fishing gear was obtained that way. He also enjoyed golfing, fixing things, traveling, helping people, and oil painting.
On April 1, 1978, in a small storefront in Benson, NE, Allen made his profession of faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. Allen was baptized at a YMCA in downtown Omaha, NE May 3, 1978, and served the Lord until his death. Allen’s faith in Jesus Christ was genuine, and he never wavered from it. He made lots of friends and will be missed dearly.
Allen was preceded in death by his father, Donald L. Mefford. He is survived by his mother, Joyce Mefford; sister Jannelle (Don) Carlson; nephews: Lucas (Stephanie) Carlson, Brock Carlson, Benjamin (Ashley) Carlson; great-nieces, Andi & Palmer; and great-nephews, Knox, Briggs, and Samuel, all of Genoa, NE; aunts, uncles, and cousins.

My heartfelt condolences to Allen’s Mother, Sister, Family and Friends.
I worked with Allen at Epsen Hillmer Graphics for around 15 years. He was a real character, and always willing to contribute to our unique challenges. I would often introduce him as our Photographer/Welder to underscore the variety contributions he would make. I appreciated that he was always willing to throw himself into the tasks at hand.
He became a great photographer and made a major contribution to our capabilities with our cutting-edge digital photography studio.
I was so glad Deb Murphy let me know that he was transferred to a hospice a couple of weeks ago. I had a chance to visit with him on the 31st and he was in good spirits and in no obvious pain. I didn’t think he would pass so quickly judging from our visit.
Allen was a unique character, Artist/Photographer, a freind and a good soul.
We will miss him and raise a toast to him at the next reunion of our old gang.
