NIELSEN, Andrew, Jr., Jun 1, 1923 May 9, 2012. Andrew Andy Nielsen, Jr. was born on June 1, 1923 in Burke, South Dakota. He graduated from Blair High School in 1941. Andy served in the United States Army from December 12, 1942 to October 23, 1945 and was a decorated serviceman. He earned the EAME Ribbon with five bronze stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He married Lorraine McKinnis on December 22, 1945. They moved to Omaha and purchased a modest home in the Benson area that he lived in until the very end. He was baptized on February 13, 1955 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Omaha. He worked for Jewel T for 35 years as a route salesman. He then worked for Slosburg for almost 20 years in the maintenance department. He was such a handyman, often referred to as Handy Andy and was so helpful in many things, but was very skilled at fixing screens and caulking! He finally retired in his mid 80s. Andy was a former American Legion member and was a VFW member since December 29, 1995. Andrew passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: Mark and Sandy Nielsen, Clark and Peggy Nielsen, all of Omaha; special friend, Maxine Therkelsen, of Blair, Nebraska; brother, Bill Nielsen and wife Pat, of Blair; sisters: Pryllis Maxwell of Omaha, Edytha Singleton and husband Don, of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren and their families: Brian Higgins and wife Susan, great-grandchildren: Ashlyn of Omaha, Austin and Addison Higgins, of Olathe, Kansas; Vanessa Pruse and husband Thomas, great-grandchildren: Victoria and Anthony Pruse, of Bennington, Nebraska; Amy Bell and husband Jeff, great-grandchildren: Jacob and Matthew Bell, of Omaha; Tonya Beister and husband Jim, great-grandchildren: Tyler, Jadon and Mason Beister, of Elkhorn, Nebraska; Andrew Nielsen, great-grandchildren: Madison and Jaxon Nielsen, of Omaha; many nieces and nephews. Andy was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lorraine. Thank you for sharing your time with us as we honor the life of Andrew Nielsen. The family will receive friends Friday, 6pm to 8pm at the West Center Chapel.
