Arlyn L. Anderson

Arlyn Loy Anderson. age 84, of Mondamin, Iowa passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012 at his home in Missouri Valley, Iowa with his family present. Arlyn was born July 31, 1928 on a farm near Magnolia, Iowa to Arthur and Hazel (Grooms) Anderson. He graduated from Magnolia Public School in 1946 where he participated in basketball and baseball, continuing to play on the town baseball team. Sports of all kinds were important to him, especially watching family members play. Arlyn enlisted in the army in February 1951 during the Korean conflict. He was stationed in France and discharged January 1954 as a Tech Sgt. He and Betty Ruffcorn were united in marriage March 27, 1955. The couple lived in the Mondamin area where they farmed and raised their three children. The family was members of the Mondamin United Methodist Church where Arlyn served on the church board and taught Sunday School for many years. He served on the Harrison County Fair Board from 1964, replacing his uncle Orval Grooms. He started the Soldier Valley boys 4-H Club in 1960 continuing through 1970. Arlyn served several years as Morgan Township Trustee Cemetery Board. Arlyn’s lifetime membership in the Jesse Strong Legion post #378 was a significant part of his life. He served as District Commander, District Vice Commander, Harrison County Commander and post #378 Commander receiving the Legions highest honor “The Award of Merit” on June 25, 2008 for 56 years of helping veterans and their families. Arlyn farmed since he was 16 years old, plus corn shelling and trucking with his friend Donald Tupper from Magnolia. He retired in 2004 due to health issues. Arlyn loved observing nature and wildlife in the Loess Hills, spending time with his grandchildren, never met a stranger and always had a story or joke to tell. ….Preceded in death by his parents, niece Jeannie (Neumeyer) Bojorquez and brother-in-law Kenneth Parkhill. …..Survivors include: Wife Betty of Missouri Valley, Iowa; daughter Michele and husband Tyson Kuehn of Mondamin; sons: Marlyn and wife Roberta of Mondamin, Iowa; Maurice and special friend Mary Hall of Mondamin, Iowa, sisters; Hollyce and Bob Neumeyer of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; sister: Ilene Parkhill of Stafford, Va.; 5 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many, many other relatives and friends.
