Arturo Y. Sim

Arturo Y. Sim died on September 23, 2018, at the age of 76, surrounded by his family in his Omaha home.

Born in Manila, Philippines, in 1942 to Marcela Yap Sim and Paul Sim Ka Chiong, Art attended Ateneo de Manila, remaining at the top of his class while participating in uncountable extracurriculars ranging from sports to the arts. He immigrated to the United States in 1963 for graduate study at Purdue University. He moved to Fremont, Michigan, where he worked at Gerber, met his wife Diane, and welcomed two sons, Jeremiah and Paul. He later relocated to Omaha, Nebraska, and worked for ConAgra Foods.

During his time in Fremont, Art was heavily involved in music ministry at All Saints Parish and volunteered for many years at St. Michael school in Brunswick.

During his time in Omaha, Art was involved in the music ministry for St. Matthew and Ss. Peter and Paul parishes. He also volunteered as the librarian at Guadalupe-Inez and Assumption schools.

Art was known for his inexhaustible supply of stories, his unrelenting logic, and his inescapable wit.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Sim Ka Chiong; his mother, Marcela Yap Sim; and his sister, Isabel Sim. He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Diane (Spletzer); his son and daughter-in-law, Jeremiah and Sylvie; his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Megan; three grandchildren, Angela, Violet, and Cecilia; eight siblings; and numerous cousins, nieces, grandnieces, nephews, and grandnephews.

VISITATION: Friday, September 28th from 5pm to 7pm at the West Center Chapel.  ROSARY: Saturday, September 29th at 9:30am at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 5801 Oak Hills Dr., followed by MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL at 10am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to:  Philippine Jesuit Foundation, 39 East 83rd St., New York, NY 10028.

    Art was a neighbor and a special guy with lots of stories everyone enjoyed. We all will miss his humor.

    Ato was a classmate in high school and college. Brilliant student, a loyal friend. He will be missed.

    So sorry to read about Art’s passing in the Fremont paper. I have very fond memories of Art and Diane while they were here in Fremont. I took a Bible class that Art taught; he was insightful, compassionate, and patient. My condolences to the Sim family.
