Audrey Finch Simmons

1930 –  2018

Audrey Finch Simmons passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018 in Omaha following surgery for a fractured hip.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Simmons, Jr. and by her parents.   She is survived by daughter, Wendie Widener; son, Lee Widener; brothers: Burton Finch (Anita), Clifford Finch (Karen), and James Finch (Ruth); sister, Sharon Robison (Wendell).  She was particularly close to her daughter, Wendie, with whom she lived following her retirement.  They enjoyed travelling together, particularly to their favorite destination, Las Vegas.

Audrey was born in Hawarden, Iowa to Ralph William and Esther Carlson Finch and enjoyed small town life as a child of the depression.  As a girl, she was a tomboy who had skinned knees most of the time.  A favorite activity was to climb to the top of a tree and enjoy the view, only to discover that she couldn’t climb down, thus requiring Dad to climb up and get her.

Audrey retired from Mutual of Omaha where she had a successful career as an auditor of hospital insurance billings and enjoyed travelling throughout the country for Mutual.  Following her retirement, Audrey became well known as a creative artist in knitting, crocheting and sewing.  Her creations were in demand at craft shows throughout the Omaha area.  She was a crafter of dolls dressed in themed clothing as well as afghan blankets and throws, rugs and many other beautiful creations.  She had a loyal following who would seek her out at craft shows.

Audrey will be lovingly remembered as one who enjoyed creating beautiful things and sharing them with others.
