Audrey M. (Schieffer) Bak

Audrey M. (Schieffer) Bak

September 21, 1931 – August 10, 2018

Nebraska is a little less fun these days. On Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, Audrey May Schieffer Bak, 86, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away at Brookestone Village in Omaha, Nebraska.

Audrey was born on Sept. 21, 1931, in Elgin, Nebraska, to Alphonse “Ollie” and Francis Schieffer. She grew up on a farm, which is where she developed a life-long passion for animals, especially dogs. She shared her home with her pet dogs her entire life. Audrey made another one of her passions, hair styling, her career. As a practicing beautician, she worked hard to support her family and became lifelong friends with her customers. It was not uncommon for her to make a trip to a nursing home or funeral parlor to fix hair for a longtime client. She finally retired at the age of 75.

If there is one word to best describe Audrey, it is FUN! She loved a good (or bad) joke and she loved to laugh. She also loved to play cards—especially Euchre—and games—especially Rummikub. She bowled on a league for years and went fishing every chance she could. Her passion for cooking meals was only surpassed by her love for serving them to family and friends. She shared that passion as a volunteer server at the American Legion Post 1 for many years. Audrey’s fashion style matched her colorful personality. She never left home without wearing sparkling costume jewelry and bright, vivid outfits that usually included her favorite color, red; she was a devoted Husker fan, after all. Audrey also was a bargain hunter and could never bypass a garage sale.

Audrey is lovingly remembered and missed by her sister, Mary Ann Steinkamp (Don), and her sister-in-law, Dorothy Schieffer (Don).  She will be forever cherished by her children: Dan Polking (Chris), Terri Hale (John), Dave Polking, and Barb Pruitt (Don); and her grandchildren: Tiffinni Berggren (Joe Salvaggi), Dan Polking, Jr, Nicholas Shell (Nickie), Rebecca Shell, Wesley Powell, and Hannah Shell. Audrey also will be missed by her great-grandchildren: AmayaLynn Starr, Owyn, Tayven, and two more in the oven; and many, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Audrey is reunited with her favorite Euchre players who left this world long before she wanted them to: her dear husband, John Bak; her parents, Ollie and Francis; and brothers, Don and Junior; along with her beloved puppies, including Randy, Sammy, Prince “Poo Poo,” Puddles, Bandit, Max, and Bill.

The family is deeply grateful for the loving care Audrey received from the staffs at Brookestone Village, St. Joseph Villa Homecare and Hospice, Beautiful Life Family Home Care, and staff and residents at St. John Vianney Residence in Omaha.

Family, friends and others whose lives Audrey touched are invited to a celebration of her life on Tuesday, August 14th from 5pm to 7pm at the West Center Chapel, 7805 W. Center Rd., followed by a VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm.  The MEMORIAL SERVICE will be on Wednesday, August 15th at 10am at the West Center Chapel.

Memorial contributions in Audrey’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).

Was very fortunate to meet this Beautiful Lady and got to know her. I would sit in her room at times to keep her company and would show me her special belongings that she cherished in her Heart and Lifetime, but most of all she would show me pictures of her children & family and all the LOVE she had for them and she would get years in her eyes she was so very proud of them.
