Bernard F. “Bernie” Costello

Bernard F. “Bernie” Costello
Jun 23, 1936 – Jan 9, 2017

Bernie Costello lived a full and happy life. He grew up in South Omaha with his parents and brothers and sisters. As a boy, he loved animals and playing sports. He attended St. Bridget Elementary and St. Joseph High School, where he met his wife-to-be of 59 years, Barbara. They started a family and settled into a little pink house on 39th Avenue. They had many good friends and family outings.

Bernie became an electrician, working for Kalina and Miller Electric for many years. He was a member of the IBEW Local #22 for more than 40 years, and belonged to the Knights of Columbus 3019 since the 1970s. He campaigned for Governor Jim Exon, and in 1978 Governor Exon appointed Bernie to the Nebraska State Board of Education.

Bernie loved to golf, fish, travel and watch Nebraska football games. He especially loved spending time with family and friends. He had a quick wit, a great sense of humor, and an open heart. He loved telling stories and visiting with people.

Bernie became ill in 2012 but continued to receive family and friends into his life. He was sometimes frustrated with his illness, but never bitter. His strong faith kept him fighting until the end. He said he did not fear death. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends.

Bernie was preceded in death by parents, Bernard S. and Rose M. Costello. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara A. Costello; children: Christine Ayotte, Timothy Costello, Steven Costello (Linda), and Jay Costello (Danielle); granddaughters, Savannah and Charlotte; siblings: Jean Koenig, Thomas Costello (Marilyn), Dennis Costello (Cindy), and Rosalie Lynch (Paul); nieces and nephews.
