Hansen, age 90, of Missouri Valley, Iowa passed away Friday, July 26, 2013 at the Longview Care Center in Missouri Valley, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease Bernice was born February 25, 1923 on the family farm in Boomer Township to Clarence R. and Tena M. (Wohlers) Thomas the second of five children. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Honey Creek, Iowa. Bernice attended grade School in Beebeetown, and graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1940. She then attended Eastern Montana State Normal School in Billings, Montana and received her teaching certificate. She taught at Boomer School No.3 until she married Richard Wayne Hansen at First Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska on May 20, 1942, her mother’s birthday, and they were married for 67 years prior to his death. Bernice and Richard lived on the family farm in rural Crescent for over 50 years where they raised their four children. Their three sons joined them in the farming operation and they would be proud to know that their ‘home place” will receive Century Farm recognition this year. They moved from the farm to town in 2000 and Bernice moved to Longview Home in 2009. Bernice was a devoted farm wife and mother and a great cook. She enjoyed sewing, yard work, and gardening and was an avid baseball fan. Her faith and church were very important to her, she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, held every office in Ladies Aid, was on the Food Committee for many years and very generous with her time. Richard and Bernice loved to travel, taking summer vacations with Ray and Millie Young. They loved their children and grandchildren and spent many hours in the bleachers watching their grandchildren in various activities. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard of 67 year in 2009 son Dean in 2003, brother-in-law: William “Bill” McIntosh, brother and sister-in-law, Robert N. and Jeanne Hansen. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law: Dick and Sarah Hansen, Brian and Donna Hansen of Honey Creek; daughter and son-in-law: Jan & Tim Guill of Missouri Valley; daughter-in-law: Sharon (Keith) Gundy of Colorado; grandchildren: Lance (Michelle) Morrow, Brian Morrow, Amy Hansen, David (Melissa) Hansen, Bruce (Tara) Hansen, Danette (Mike) Martin, Mason (Sara) Hansen, Jeff Hansen, Jill Hansen; step-grandchildren: Katie (Aaron) Pattee, Amanda Guill; great-grandchildren: Laura & Olivia Morrow, Claire & Ben Hansen, Tyler & Addison Martin, Mia & Ava Hansen, Isla & Kendal Hansen, step-great-grandchildren: Brandon Guill & Ali and Aiden Pattee, sister: Helen McIntosh, brother: William (Betty) Thomas, sisters: Shirley(Ira) Golden, Jean (Lynn) Royer and many nieces, nephews and friends. A Prayer Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday with visitation to follow at the First Lutheran Church in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church in Missouri Valley or the Alzheimers Asso. The family would like to invite everyone to a time of lunch and fellowship at the Rand Center following the committal service.
