Bertha Allen Asbury Munson
October 27, 1921-August 14, 2024
Bertha was born October 27, 1921, at home in Rothville, Missouri, the third of four daughters born to Sterling and Bettie Asbury. She was a member of Rothville Baptist Church.
She attended Rosehill School, a one-room school, for 8 years, and the Rothville High School for four years. Often, she would ride a horse to high school. There she played on the basketball team and graduated salutatorian. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Commercial Extension School in Omaha, taking a business course by correspondence.
In April 1941, Bertha went to work in the Home Office of Western Auto in Kansas City. Then she was employed for office work at the Kansas City Medical Depot, where she met Harold. They were married at the First Lutheran Church in Kansas City on October 11, 1943. The service was officiated by Rev. Edwin Munson, Harold’s brother.
After the war, Bertie and Harold came to Omaha in November 1945. She became a full-time homemaker and mother to two daughters, Barbara and Allene. They joined Trinity Lutheran Church and later became charter members of St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in 1952. Bertie taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, served on the Altar Guild, and was active in the women’s organization and Mary Martha Circle. She and Harold were members of the STARS, St. Timothy’s Active Retired Seniors. St. Timothy’s and her friendships there have been an important part of her life. Bertie volunteered for years in the gift shop of Immanuel Hospital.
Bertie enjoyed doing needlework, especially counted cross stitch, and spent many happy hours china painting creating many beautiful pieces to decorate their home and giving some to her daughters and grandchildren. She enjoyed playing golf with her women’s league. Bertie and Harold traveled visiting family, attending activities of grandchildren, to all 50 states, and 17 foreign countries.
Bertha passed away August 14, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Harold Munson; her parents; and sisters Clara Garr, Bettie Forbach, and Mary Sue Greening.
