Betty J. Reed

Betty J. Reed

July 24, 1932 – August 22, 2018

Betty J. Reed, age 86, of Omaha, NE passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska.

Betty was born in Custer County, Nebraska on a farm between Arnold and Callaway, Nebraska to Marshall Jason and Hilma Christine (Kolbo) Woodward on July 24, 1932.  She graduated from Callaway High School in 1950 and then completed cosmetology training at Hasting’s Beauty Culture Academy in May of 1951.  She was working and living in Broken Bow when she began courtship with Robert Reed.  Bob and Betty married on what they described as the hottest day of the year, August 8, 1952 in the Fidelity Evangelical United Brethren Church that was near the Woodward home farm.  They lived in Broken Bow, Nebraska.

Betty practiced cosmetology and eventually owned and operated her own shop in Broken Bow, the La Petite.  She sold the business in 1977 when she and Robert moved to North Platte, where they lived until 1996.  They then located to Hamburg, Iowa to be near their children and grandchildren.  For more than fifty years, she was a faithful member and tireless volunteer of the Presbyterian Church.  Wherever they went, Betty was an ambassador of good will, good sense, and great food.  She formed life-long friendships in every phase of her life and was known as a spirited woman who loved to have fun and cherished her beloved husband, “Bobbie,” her daughters and grandchildren, parents, sisters and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Robert, her husband of 59 years and their infant daughter Deborah; sister and brother-in law, Ruth and Glenn Rosentrater of Gothenburg, Nebraska; sister, Marcia Townsend of West Virginia; brothers-in law, LeRoy Beshaler of Callaway, Nebraska and Ben Comer of Mesa, Arizona; and nephew, Stephen Comer.

She is survived by daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Reed (husband, Ellis Makos) of Omaha and their daughter Olivia of Denver, CO; daughter, Janet Lechner (husband, James) and their twin sons, Jeffrey and Reed, all of Omaha; two sisters, Lucille Beshaler of Callaway, NE, and Sue Comer of Mesa, AZ; honorary daughter, Sharon Franssen of Broken Bow, NE; nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Monday, August 27th at 11am at the West Center Chapel.  Interment: Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, NE.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) or Josie Harper Hospice House of Omaha.

My deepest sympathy to all of Betty’s family. My late mother knew Betty from church in N.P. and was fond of her. Janet, I remember you from church and high school. May God comfort you in your loss.

Janet, when I wrote my condolence last evening I forgot to add my maiden name. When I knew you in high school, my name was Lori Peters. My late mom’s name was Pat Peters.
