Betty Jane (Hutchison) Slone

Betty Jane (Hutchison) Slone

Betty Jane (Hutchison) Slone, 96, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away peacefully December 28, 2020 at Immanuel Lakeside Lighthouse.

She was born February 4, 1924, the youngest daughter of Gifford and Millicent Hutchison of Silver Creek, Nebraska.

Betty spent her childhood in Silver Creek with her parents and sister and thoroughly enjoyed the small-town Nebraska life. She was an excellent student throughout school, played cello in the orchestra, and loved to ice skate in the winter and roller skate at the local rink year around.

From her father, she inherited a lifelong love of the railroads, rural culture, and small-town life. By high school, she was helping him deliver groceries and supplies to customers around Silver Creek area. Days spent riding, and sometimes driving, the truck, were the source of many stories and memories she shared with friends and family throughout her lifetime.

After graduating from Silver Creek High School, Betty attended Wayne State Teachers College, earning her elementary school teaching certificate. She began her career teaching K-12 in one-room country schools in Central Nebraska. She met the love of her life, George Slone, while both were teaching in Duncan, Nebraska in 1947. They married in 1948 and shared their lives for over 70 years.

In the classroom, at home, or working in the community, Betty never missed an opportunity to promote reading, education, and learning. She was a lifelong member of P.E.O. International, supporting education for women around the world. She was also active in Methodist Circle groups, book clubs, was an avid Bridge player, and a Cub Scout Den Mother and Boy Scout mom for many years.

Career opportunities necessitated frequent moves for the family. It also introduced them to a small, extraordinary, group of teachers, spouses, and neighbors who became lifelong friends. Betty delighted in receiving frequent calls, visits, and the group’s “Round Robin” newsletter for 59 years as the group moved around the country.

She was an enthusiastic and tireless orchestrator of the family moves, vacations, and events. Equally willing to jump in and help others, and always able to apply one of her homespun colloquialisms to put a fine point on a job well done.

Her smile, laugh, energy, humility, and grace will be missed by a grateful family.

Betty was preceded in death by father, Gifford Hutchison, mother, Millicent Hutchison, husband, George Slone, and sister, Carolyn House.

She is survived by sons Donald Slone and wife, Linda Slone, Robert Slone and wife, Teresa Slone, Bryan Slone and wife, Leslie Slone, Gregg Slone and wife Susan Slone. She is survived by grandchildren Tamara Slone, Marc Slone, Jordan Slone, Steven Slone, Lauryn Slone, Damon Landreth, Brittany Dorr, Ryan Slone, and Tyler Slone and four great grandchildren.

Aunt Betty was a fantastic Aunt. Was always excited to see her! She had a captivating voice and a fantastic smile and laugh. She was a fantastic cook, a seamstress, a good Mother and an anything else that might come along that needed tending. An all around American Beauty. She an Uncle George were a fine looking couple. And they had a fine set of sons! Love them all! She will be missed, but the good memories will live on! RIP Aunt Betty—see you in Heaven down the road.
