Carol Lois Holst was born on July 9th,1953, in Browerville, Minnesota, to Roy and Albina Gjerstad. She was the sixth of nine children. Carol grew up working on the family farm where she developed her unparalleled work ethic. She attended Carter Country School in rural Eagle Bend, MN, and graduated from Eagle Bend High School. Carol excelled in music. She played the French horn and sang in the school choir where she was selected for a touring performance group that took her to Washington D.C. She also frequently sang in church.
On June 17, 1972, Carol married her first husband, Gary Sadlemyer, and they moved to Nebraska just over a year later. While together they welcomed two children, Amanda and John.
In 2003, Carol met her second husband, Fritz Holst, and they relocated to Phoenix, AZ. They were married in March 2007 and continued living in Arizona until returning to Omaha in 2021.
Carol held a variety of jobs over the years. In her early adult life, Carol discovered she had a knack for sales, and she was a top performer in the paper industry. Later in life, Carol worked for an airline as a reservation booking agent. She used her excellent communication skills working in a few different call centers, and even worked for a casino as a blackjack and craps dealer.
Carol loved nothing more than to spend time with her children and grandchildren, of which she was blessed with four: Maddie, Henry, Isla and Violet.
She loved spending time at her sister, Roberta’s lake house back in Minnesota, enjoying time on the water, fishing, caring for the gardens, and enjoying nature.
At home, Carol enjoyed caring for her plants, baking, sewing, being near the ocean whenever possible, cheering on Husker football, and the occasional trip to the casino to play the slots.
Carol was preceded in death by parents, Roy Gjerstad and Albina Greenwood; brother, Mark Gjerstad; and husband, Fritz Holst. She is survived by children, Amanda Olderog and John Sadlemyer (Lindsay); grandchildren: Maddie, Henry, Isla, and Violet; sisters: Vivian Scott, Kathy Lesman, Roberta Behrmann, Mary Jo Behrmann, and Rita Hull; brothers, Steve Gjerstad and Jerry Gjerstad; and many nieces and nephews.
