Carolyn S. Hansen

Carolyn S. Hansen

July 25, 1934- April 29, 2025

Carolyn Steger Hansen lived a life defined by kindness, love, and quiet strength. She was born in Decatur, Illinois, and spent her formative years in Webster Groves, Missouri, where she graduated from high school. Carolyn went on to attend Iowa State University, where she developed a lifelong love of learning and meaningful connection.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard Steger and Edna Steger Maxwell. Carolyn is survived by her devoted husband, Robert W. Hansen, who stood by her side through every season of life. Bob and Carolyn married in 1956 and were married 69 wonderful years.  They lived in Pensacola, Corpus Christy when Bob was in the Navy, then moved to Omaha in 1960.  Her legacy continues through her three loving children—Mike Hansen (Sharon), Tom Hansen (Sue), and Cathy Fisher (Todd)—who carry forward her compassion, positivity, and grace.

Carolyn was a proud and joyful grandmother to ten cherished grandchildren: Ryan Fisher, Mark Hansen, Sean Fisher, Sara Maslonka, Jeff Hansen, Cole Fisher, Lisa Rutherford, John Hansen, Jenni Rosen, and Clayton Fisher. Her love extended even further to her eight beloved great-grandchildren: Chaplin Fisher, Rylan Rutherford, Beck Fisher, Mason Maslonka, Ashton Fisher, Shay Fisher, and Harper Rutherford.

Her greatest joys in life were spending time with friends, family, and those she loved. Carolyn lived each day guided by simple but powerful principles, be kind; stay positive; and stay involved. She was deeply

committed to giving back to her community and generously gave her time and energy to organizations she loved, including the Junior League, P.E.O, Clarkson Service League, Aksarben Ball, Omaha Symphony, Omaha Community Playhouse, Pi Beta Phi Sorority, and many others. Her faith was a source of strength, and she remained actively involved in her church throughout her life.

Carolyn was a true people person, effortlessly forming lasting friendships with people of all ages and walks of life. She made friends wherever she went, and everyone who met her felt better for having known her. She was equally at home on the tennis court in her younger years or on the golf course well into her 80s. She loved playing Bridge, traveling, and curling up with a good book. Her days were full of curiosity, joy, and connection.

Even in the face of illness and pain, including a long and courageous battle with cancer, Carolyn never gave up. Her strength was quiet but powerful, carried always by a hopeful spirit and a heart full of love.

She taught all of us—by example—to be kind, to care for one another, and to live with purpose. Whether through friendships, community, or family traditions, she stayed connected and brought joy to every interaction. Carolyn was loved by all and will be deeply missed by the many whose lives she touched. Her memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Sending hugs, prayers and love to all the Hansen family. I will always remember Carolyn in her white pleated tennis skirt and visor picking us up from school, taking us to cooking classes, planning slumber parties for the girls. An incredible woman, mother , grandmother. We will remember her high energy, positive attitude and ability to bring people together. She will be greatly missed.

I have such wonderful memories of Carolyn. She was a dear friend to my mother, Joyce Mammel who passed away 13 years ago. She always had a smile on her face and a big positive attitude about everything. I am sure you will all miss her greatly. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Please accept our condolences on the loss of a truly wonderful lady. I have known Carolyn for my entire life and have the best memories with her and the Hansen family. We went skiing in Colorado which was just one lasting childhood memory I have never forgotten. Prayers to the family!
