Catherine L. Crawford

Catherine Loretta Crawford age 88, of Missouri Valley was born September 15, 1926 in New York City, New York, to Hugh and Margaret Byrnes. One of 5 siblings. Three sisters plus one brother. She met and married Stanley Harrison Crawford in 1951. At the time he was serving the U.S. Army. Though she lost her own Mother to TB when she was only 5 years old, she was the most loving and affectionate of Mothers. Farm life was not an easy transition for a city girl, but she was a tireless worker. And if anything could make her spirits rise, it was singing. She loved her Irish lullabies, as well as many popular tunes of the day. She was a modest woman and a humble one. Her children didn’t even know until they were grown, she had sung on Radio in New York in her late teens. She loved her many years of hard work at Valley Drug Store. Cathy cared for so many others too. During her many years of work at the Valley Drug Store she collected funnies from the newspaper and made little books. Then she would take them to the nursing home hoping to cheer someone up. Though she wasn’t fond of cooking, we remember her always cooking up a tasty dish for someone who wasn’t feeling well or for some event in town. Stanley bought a house in town. Soon after moving to town from the farm Cathy and Stan enjoyed becoming members of the Mo. Valley Country Club. That opened up a whole new world for them. Golf! This was a common joy they both shared for a number of years. Cathy’s last few years have been spent receiving the most loving care the Marque Place, assisted living and Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Omaha. In both places, she’s lovingly referred to as “The sweet little thing with the voice of an angel.” She’ll be dearly missed, but not for long. As she and Kitty often talked about the Bibles promise of a time when Jesus will call out and those asleep in death will awaken to a world where death will be no more. Jo 5 28, 29. Then will be a time to truly sing for joy. Catherine is preceded in death by her husband Stanley Harrison Crawford, her three sisters Margaret, Winifred, and Patricia. Catherine is survived by her two children; Donald W. Crawford of Omaha, Nebraska, Kitty De Ochoa of San Antonio, Texas, grandchildren; Cara Kimberly, Chad, Dustin, and Matt Crawford, great grandchildren; Kori, Kaddi, Will, Hannah, Corbin, and Brody. In appreciation: Don and Kitty express heartfelt thanks to their friends and family for the many gestures of kindness and expressions of comfort and love at this time.
