MSgt. Charles E. Riggs U.S. Army retired 93, of Missouri Valley, Iowa passed away on December 21, 2014. Charles was born in rural Harrison County on February 3, 1921 to the late Ben and Lulu (Riley) Riggs. Charles graduated from the Missouri Valley High School Class of 1940. He enlisted in the regular Army on October 30, 1940 and was assigned to the Station Hospital in FT. Crook, Nebraska. He spent over 30 years in the medical field serving in Kodiak Island, Alaska, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Paris, France, Salzburg, Austria, Ft. Carson, Colorado, Seoul, Korea, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, Landstuhl, Germany, Ft. Sheridan, Illinois, An Khe Vietnam, and the Reserve Unity of Taunton, Mass, where he was Senior Advisor to the 399th Evacuation Hospital. He returned May 31, 1972. Over the years, St. Riggs received the bronze Star Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster) Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal (7th award), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and numerous other certificates and awards. After his Military retirement, he worked for the Missouri Valley Post Office from 1973-1984 where he retired again. He was a member of the Missouri Valley Methodist Church since 1939 and where he and wife Marjorie were married August 15, 1948. He liked going to Auctions and to Coffee with friends each morning, enjoyed bird watching and natures wildlife. Charles was a member of American Legion Post #337 since 1945. He was a volunteer for the Rand Center and the Red Cross Blood Mobile. In 2001 the Chamber of Commerce presented him an award for volunteer service. Survivors include his wife of 66 years Marjorie of Missouri Valley, Iowa and cousin Twyman Jones and wife Betty of Normal, Illinois. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Everyone is invited to a time of lunch and fellowship at the Methodist Church following the Committal Service at the Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church.
