Charlotte Marie Buell was born in Moline, IL on February 24, 1920.  She was one of four children born to Leslie and Emma Buell.  Charlotte often told me of her wonderful childhood, how blessed she was to grow up so well loved. She graduated from high school in 1938 along with her sister Twyla, they graduated the same year even though they were 13 months apart. (She didn’t know why they ended up in the same class.)

Charlotte married Gerald Lowrance in November of 1941, thirteen days before Pearl Harbor.  They had met in High School.  Jerry enlisted in the Navy and served in WWII.

Jerry returned from the war in 1945.  Back in Moline, IL he purchased a franchise to open a Dairy Queen.  In 1947 Jerry and Charlotte opened the Dairy Queen in the nation in Council Bluffs, IA on 16th & Broadway.  They soon opened a second location on 27th and Broadway.  Jerry and Charlotte had a daughter, Rebecca, in 1946 and later adopted a son, Andrew.  This kept Charlotte busy at home. She ran a wonderful household.

I always told my grandmother that she was Martha Stewart before there was a Martha.  She was an amazing cook!  Her talents did not stop in the kitchen.  She had a vegetable garden, flower garden, she knit, sewed, played the organ, and sang.  Charlotte and Jerry were incredibly involved in their church with music. (Jerry played the trombone).

Above all she was devoted to her faith in God.  God gave her to us for 101 years, and now he has called her home to rest in peace.  I will you miss you tremendously, but I know that you are reunited with Jerry, and he has probably been wondering what took you so long.  I can picture him welcoming you into his open arms.
