Cheri S. Rubio

Cheri S. Rubio

April 4, 1958 – March 22, 2024

Cheri Susann Rubio, 65, of Omaha passed away peacefully on Friday, March 22, 2024  embraced by the love of her family in the comfort of her home.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1pm on Monday, April 1, 2024 at A View on State in the Palm Room, located at 13467 State St, Omaha, Nebraska.  Cheri loved flowers and plants.  Attendees are encouraged to wear black and white, pink, or animal prints—tributes to Cheri’s signature style.  Memorials may be left to the Glioblastoma Foundation or Nebraska Humane Society.

Cheri was born on April 4, 1958, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the daughter of Harold and Geraldine Humphrey.  She spent most of her childhood and attended college in California, then lived in Washington and Texas before settling in Omaha, Nebraska. She married Rob Rubio on May 18, 2009.

Cheri earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chico State University.  Her compassionate nature and dedication to healing were evident through her diverse career in nursing, which spanned various specialties including med/surg, CCU, ICU, emergency, PACU, case management, nursing leadership, and quality improvement.

An avid gardener, Cheri had a remarkable affinity for nurturing life, evident in her lush garden and thriving houseplants. She was also an animal lover, bird watcher, skilled seamstress, and had a passion for genealogy.  Cheri loved her friends and family fiercely and confronted her glioblastoma diagnosis with bravery and strength.

Cheri’s legacy is carried on by her mother, Geraldine Humphrey; husband, Rob Rubio; children, US Air Force Colonel Stuart (Megan) Rubio, Kristina (Jonathan) Mueller, David Rubio, Klaus Backlund; grandchildren, US Air Force Academy Cadet Second Class Ashton Rubio, Ethan Rubio, Evan Rubio, and Anderson Mueller; siblings, Lori (Steve) Preciado, Sandy Hurley, Joe (Tina) Humphrey; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and her cherished pets. She is reunited in death with her father, Harold ‘Butch’ Humphrey, and her son, Jamie Rubio.

Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to Cheri’s dedicated care team: the neuro-oncology team at UNMC led by Dr. Nicole Shonka; Regina Wilson, Director of Congregational Care at Dundee Presbyterian Church; friends Fatima Larson and Carissa Fisher; family members Lori Preciado, Jennifer Philson, Sandy Hurley, Jerry Humphrey; neighbors, the Wassingers and the Carlsons; caregiver Marney Gass; Endless Journey Hospice (Lola, Mo, Cole, Kalah, Mariah, Mandy, Andrea).  We are also profoundly thankful for the outpouring of support from many friends and family members through texts, calls, prayers, meals, and countless other gestures of love.

This is a beautiful write up on a bright spirit who impacted many. I remember visiting the Backlund house as a high school student, and about her enthusiasm for the love her daughter Kristina shared with my friend Jonny Mueller. I wish her loved ones well in their grief process. We lost a good one.

My heart go out to Klaus and Kristina and Cheri’s entire family. Cheri was a beautiful and intelligent woman, I’m so glad we became friends when we were neighbors in Mission Park where our kiddos grew up. RIP 💜

I take comfort that Cheri is in a better place and her mother, my dear friend Jerry, finds comfort in that. Cheri was a beautiful girl from the time I met her as a teenager. I pray for her family, she will be greatly missed.

I am so sorry to learn of Cheri’s passing. We were friends from our neighborhood in Mission Park. I moved to Idaho in 2013 and had not seen Cheri except for a post from time to time on facebook. She was truly lovely inside and out and I sure will miss her. To her family and friends I give my deepest sympathies as I know you are all hurting at this time. I pray for peace in your hearts today.

We have many beautiful memories with Cheri when our daughters Kristina and Diana were in high school. We could find Cheri at school choir and show choir productions. Her smile will always be with us.
