CHESLEY, Marvin D.

Marvin D. Chesley Feb 22, 1930 – Jul 17, 2016 Marvin Dean Chesley was born on February 22, 1930 in North Bend, Nebraska, to Carl and Tillie Chesley. He was the oldest of three children–Arlene Kracl of Arvada, Colorado, and the late Gayle Chesley of North Bend, Nebraska. At age 9, while assisting his farmhand father in the field, he injured his left arm in an accident. He later lost the arm due to gangrene. Regardless, he excelled in high school basketball and football and continued to play tennis, pursue hunting and fishing, and many physical activities. His mother encouraged him to seek a career other than farming and suggested bookkeeping. He followed her advice, which eventually led to a career as a CPA. While pursuing this path, he met and married Patricia Ann Malady and immediately his family blossomed to five children in the course of four and one half years. After graduating he worked for several accounting firms before becoming a partner at Kading, Chesley and Woodke. He overcame many obstacles in life, including a diagnosis of acute myelocytic leukemia in 1984, which carried with it a prognosis of certain death. He is remembered as one who did not let life’s difficulties limit him; in fact, his children never viewed him as handicapped in any way. Throughout his adult years he was active in Toastmasters and Elks Club, and he was a devoted member of St Gerald Catholic Church. He also resided in Niobrara for part of the year, enjoying many close friendships. Almost to the day he that died, he remained active by playing golf, fishing and entertaining friends. During all this time he was unaware that he had a severely damaged heart. He had a heart attack, and chose to have quad bypass surgery. It was successful, but he died of complications on Sunday, July 17, 2016. He was loved by many and will be missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia A. Chesley; brother, Gayle Chesley; brother-in-law, Eldon Kracl. He is survived by his four daughters: Michele Evert (Pat); Maureen Mancuso (Mark), Kathy Griffin (Steve), and Amy LeGrand (Jon); son, Steve Chesley (Barb); sixteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; sister, Arlene Kracl; sister-in-law, Joan Chesley; nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 20th, from 5pm to 7pm at St. Gerald Catholic Church, 9602 “Q” Street, with VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm at the church. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Thursday, July 21st at 10am at St. Gerald Catholic Church. Interment, Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
