Colleen Ann McMahon

Colleen Ann McMahon

Aug 25, 1929 – Feb 26, 2017

Died on February 26, 2017, in Mission, Kansas at the age of 87. She lived in Omaha for more than 83 of her 87 years.

Colleen was the daughter of the late Dr. Emmett and Catherine (Heafey) McMahon. Colleen and her three sisters—Catherine Rose, Mary Margaret and Helen Jean (Fitzpatrick)—were raised in St. Bridget Parish in Omaha. The McMahon family moved to Santa Monica, California, for about a year in the early 1940s and returned to Omaha where they belonged to St. Cecilia Cathedral Parish.

Colleen was educated at Cathedral High School and Duchesne College and enjoyed regular reunions with high school and college friends. For most of her career, Colleen was the office manager and administrative assistant in the medical office of Dr. Leo T. Heywood. Upon his retirement, Colleen became a familiar face in the offices of Dr. John D. Hartigan and Dr. Richard Q. Crotty. Colleen developed lasting friendships with co-workers in each office and earned the love and gratitude of the patients she served.

At home, Colleen devoted herself to caring for her mother and her Aunt Mary Heafey throughout their elderly years. She found great joy in her extended family and loved the visits with her many cousins in the Omaha and Lincoln vicinity.

Colleen was an integral part of Fitzpatrick family events and regularly transported her elderly relatives to Grand Island, NE, for holiday celebrations, graduations and a wedding. She was a beloved aunt for the Fitzpatrick children and great-aunt to the Fitzpatrick and Gallo children.

Colleen was a regular at Christ the King Parish from the 1970s until 2014.  She also enjoyed attending Mass in the chapel at Boys Town. When her health began to fail, she moved to the Kansas City area to be closer to family.

Colleen was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters: Catherine McMahon, RSCJ, Mary McMahon, RSCJ, and Jean Fitzpatrick; and her brother-in-law, Dr. Ed Fitzpatrick.

She is survived by her nieces and nephew: Rose Fitzpatrick of Killeen, Texas, Jean Fitzpatrick of Kansas City, Missouri, John Fitzpatrick (Laura) of Kansas City, Missouri and Margaret Gallo (Andrew) of Austin, Texas; grandnieces and grandnephews: Katarina, Ciaran and Isabel Fitzpatrick and Grant and Gabrielle Gallo; and by her close cousins from the Heafey and McMahon families. She also leaves behind her longtime, close friends.

VISITATION begins Friday, March 3rd at 5pm at the Bel Air Chapel, 12100 W. Center Rd., followed by VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm.  MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Saturday, March 4th at 10am at Christ the King Catholic Church.  Interment, family estate at Calvary Cemetery. The family suggests memorials for the care of elderly sisters of the Religious of the Sacred Heart (please specify Oakwood Retirement Center), 4120 Forest Park Ave, St. Louis, MO, 63108: Christ the King parish in Omaha; or the charity of your choice.
