Del was born in Clalista, Kansas in 1930 and graduated from Kingman High in 1948. After school he joined the Air Force, where he had a very important job: he ran the NCO club and played basketball throughout Europe. After his service he returned to the Wichita, Kansas area and found his bride, Bernadette Karolus. They married in 1957 and had 35 hard-working but loving years together.
Delbert’s work career started with P.I.E. Truck Line, which eventually moved the family to Omaha. He also started several successful businesses while still working full time at P.I.E. They were a parking lot sweeping service, insurance car salvage pool, 2 different C & D landfills, and Comet equipment. In 1993 their business “startup” was River City Recycling, and Metro Landscape Materials and Recycling which still operates today.
Delbert had many hobbies including golfing, fishing, dancing, and buying equipment and tools! His favorite hobby was following his beloved Nebraska Huskers! GBR! Friends and family enjoyed his many motor home tailgates and short trips to conference games! He did finally semi-retire and moved to Texas to a beautiful house that he and Judy thoroughly enjoyed.
