Delores Darlene Stejskal

Delores Darlene Stejskal

August 17, 1925 – October 10, 2020

Delores was born in 1925 on a farm just west of Geneva, Nebraska.  While in high school she went to local dances and met Harry Stejskal and that is when the dancing started.  She graduated from Geneva High and worked at a bank, and then when World War II started, she went to Lincoln and worked in government offices.  Harry joined the Navy and was sent to Long Beach, California, Delores and a girlfriend decided they should work in California, too.  There, Delores ‘found’ Harry, and they married on December 22, 1944.  This was all planned for the last day of “leave” before Harry was sent to Okinawa.

After the war, Delores and Harry moved back to Lincoln.  She found a bookkeeping job and Harry went to UNL on the GI bill and studied construction.  Part of his ‘study’ was to help build the new UNL stadium.

In 1948, they moved to Omaha.  Sonya was born in 1950 and a year later the Stejskal family lived on Camden and 36th Street, in a house that Harry built and just the first of many houses.  In I954, LuAnn was born in another house built by Harry.  Both daughters went to 4-6 different schools from kindergarten to 8th grade.  Harry built house after house, and Delores chose the types of flooring and countertops and paint schemes as well as figuring and writing out all the payroll.

Finally, in 1964, Harry and Delores built a great house in Ralston and that is where they both finished out their days.  From the 1960s to the 1990s…Harry built houses and Delores decorated them.  They also started a formal Stejskal Construction Co. and build Dairy Queens and Village Inns in Omaha and Lincoln.  They built a 24-unit apartment complex and Delores managed all the rental details.

In 2005, Harry died of lung cancer and Delores was alone.  She still tried to go to some dancing events but it wasn’t until she received a call from Bill Hayes, an old friend who had been in the same dancing circles that she found a new partner to go to all the dances in Omaha and Lincoln.

They also traveled together to Alaska and Mexico.  Bill and Delores were constant companions.

Delores died on October 10, 2020.  She leaves behind two daughters, Sonya Stejskal and LuAnn Denholm.  LuAnn is married to Bill Denholm.  Sonya is married to James Mercer.  Sonya’ s children include Tonya Larson married to Bill Larson and they have two boys, Drew and Cooper.  Sonya’s other daughter is Nina Fidler and her partner is Josh Bundren.

Preceded in death by husband, Harry F. and brother, Darrell Bures.  Survived by daughters, Sonya Stejskal (James Mercer) and LuAnn Denholm (Bill); granddaughters, Tonya Fidler-Larson (Bill) and Nina Fidler (Josh Bundren); two great-grandsons, Drew and Cooper; and special friend, William Hayes.
