    Don, Justin & Lora,

My deepest sympathies for the loss of Derek. There are no words for the gaping hole his passing left. He always had an incredibly positive attitude, infectious smile, witty remark, and a bubbly personality. He strived to make the most out of life, no matter the circumstances. Derek was truly one of the best people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. He touched many lives in his short 28 years. We should all strive to live our lives to the fullest like Derek did. . .

I pray that you find peace and comfort in the many memories of Derek. I truly believe that even though he isn’t physically here, he is still with us.

    Love,
    Michelle Kros

Although, I did not get to the UP gym as often as I should, when I did go, Derek would always be the bright spot of working out. Always had a smile on his face and something funny to say , such a warm kind person. I feel blessed that I was able to get to know him. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

My deepest sympathies to Derek’s family. I know myself and many, many others at UP will miss him greatly. His positive attitude and outlook on life, despite what he was going through, is something that I will never forget and is something I will take with me and try to emulate when faced with life’s toughest challenges. His perseverance and positivity were infectious and will continue to inspire those who knew him.

My UP Fitness Center workout routine was crafted for me by Derek, and he made sure to walk me through all of the different exercises so I did them correctly. I truly felt that he cared about my well-being and progress. And I could always be sure to get a greeting from him, by name, every morning. He will definitely be missed, and I send my prayers for peace and healing to his family.

My condolences to Derek’s family, fiancée and friends. I knew Derek from UP Fitness Center. Derek always impressed me with his positive attitude and encouragement of others. I looked forward to seeing Derek on Wednesday’s when he’d always say “Mike, Mike, Mike — what day is it?” in reference to a funny commercial. Know that all the folks at UP who knew Derek will miss him greatly too. My prayers are for you at this difficult time.

Derek was such an amazing person in life. He had a strong, kind, and peaceful soul. When someone is that wonderful in life, take comfort in knowing they are even greater in the next. His resilient attitude, no matter what life threw at him, will forever stick with me. Just from reading the comments left on here and on his Facebook, it is obvious he touched a lot of lives and found a special place in a lot of people’s hearts. I am beyond grateful I got to be one of those people. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I had the pleasure of meeting Derek at the UP fitness center. He was such an inspiration as he battled through his illness. He never seemed down or complained and always welcomed every person through the door. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of his friends and family.

Prayers to the family. I had the pleasure to go to his classes, to name a few, boot camp on Wednesdays, weightless on Fridays. I have deeply missed seeing Derek every day in UP fitness center. He’s the smile, light and inspiration to all of us there.

  • Steven Gittlieb Posted October 22, 2018 6:59 am

Sincere condolences to you and your family.

  • D’Antae Potter Posted October 24, 2018 8:17 pm

Deepest condolences to the family. Derek always brought a smile to my face whenever I engaged with him. The majority of the time I spent with Derek was at Omaha Central High School both lifting weights with the baseball team and taking advanced Spanish classes. He was one of my favorites because he was always so welcoming and happy. You will be missed.

Like many of the people above, I knew Derek through the UP Fitness Center and I would occasionally see him on Thu nights at Miracle Hills golf course. His foursome of friends just happened to play in front of my foursome of friends. We would talk about how we played the next day. He was always welcoming and easy to talk to. I admired his attitude as he fought the cancer. I told him I was praying for him several times but the last time I saw him, I could tell it was getting the best of him. Now I pray that God has welcomed him into the splendor of his heavenly kingdom. You fought the good fight. Rest in Peace Derek.
