DETISCH, Robert J., Ph.D.

Robert J. Detisch, Ph.D. Jan 27, 1935 – Oct 11, 2016 Robert (Bob) John Detisch, the eldest of two sons, was born to the late John and Myra Detisch on January 27, 1935 in Erie, Pennsylvania. He entered into rest on October 11, 2016 in Omaha, Nebraska. Bob grew up in Erie and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English from Pennsylvania State University (where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society). He earned a Masters of Arts in English from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin. Serving in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959, Bob was stationed in France. Bob married the love of his life, Marian Davitt, on August 29, 1959 and they raised two sons. They moved to Omaha in 1971 and Bob became a Professor of English at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). Bob’s specialty was 18th Century English Literature and he created an Introduction to Detective Fiction class. He was twice elected Chair of the UNO English Department. He retired in 2000 after enjoying a 33 year-long teaching career. Bob had been an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church (Erie, PA), Morning Star Lutheran Church (Omaha, NE) and Pella Lutheran Church (Omaha, NE), where he sang in the choir. Bob was an avid reader and he loved music, mainly jazz and blues. He enjoyed fishing, watching Penn State football and spending time with his grandchildren. Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marian Detisch; his brother, Donald Detisch (Sue) and their daughters: Blakeslee, Jennifer, Sara, and their families; his son, John Detisch (Hillary Nather-Detisch) and their daughters: Sophia, Arianna and Helena; and his son, Douglas Detisch (Elise Lundeen-Detisch) and their children, Annalise and Henry. MEMORIAL VISITATION on Wednesday, October 19 from 5pm to 7pm at the Bel Air Chapel, 12100 W. Center Road. Private Memorial Service to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association/Nebraska Chapter.
