Donald David Swanson

SWANSON, Donald David Feb 15, 1924 – Aug 30, 2013 Born on February 15, 1924 to Anna Edquist and John Albert Swanson, he entered his Eternal Home on August 30, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Swanson; sister, Marianne Swanson Bishop of Des Moines, Iowa. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Muirhead Swanson; children: John Swanson (Deanna) of Sturgeon Bay, WI, D. Scott Swanson (Judy) of Omaha, Betsy Moran (Jeff) of Omaha, and Polly Mizelle (Robert) of Rockville, VA; 14 beloved grandchildren; 14 delightful great-grandchildren. Don was President of Standard Blueprint Company, which was founded by his father in 1919. Beyond his employment, he had a lifetime of service that included the Immanuel Hospital Board, Dana College Board, President of the Metropolitan Y.M.C.A. Board, the Boy Scout Eagle Review Board, and President of Benson High P.T.A. A 1942 graduate of Benson High, he was also a member of the Benson High School Hall of Fame. He attended Omaha University, where he lettered in tennis. Don was a member of Downtown Rotary and the Business Men’s Breakfast Club. During his lifetime he was a 19-gallon donor to the Red Cross Blood Bank. Don and Pat were married 68 years ago at Dundee Presbyterian Church, where he was a faithful member of the Retired Men’s Bible Class, and a former Elder and church Treasurer. As an avid and talented gardener, he started several hundred tomato plants each year, distributing them to friends and community gardens for others to enjoy. He was challenged to begin many exotic plant species from minute seeds, and his orchard produced abundant crops of fruit. This generous man was honored by his children with the gift of his special license plate that read, “R Santa.” The family will receive friends Monday, Sep 2nd from 5pm to 7pm at the West Center Chapel. MEMORIAL SERVICE Tuesday, Sep 3rd at 11am at Dundee Presbyterian Church with lunch to follow. Private Interment, Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials are suggested to Dundee Presbyterian Church, Omaha Home for Boys, Metro YMCA, or Downtown Omaha Rotary.
