Donald L. Poppe

Donald L. Poppe
December 18, 1933 – November 15, 2019

Donald Lee Poppe was born December 18, 1933, to Carl and Freida (Peters) Poppe in rural Byron, Nebraska.  He died peacefully November 15, 2019, at his home surrounded by family.

Don was baptized in St. Mark’s Lutheran church in Ruskin, Nebraska.  He was raised on the farm in rural Byron with his nine brothers and sisters and he began farming with his father at a very young age.  Don was a lifelong farmer; the land and taking care of his livestock were his passions.  He married Carol Klusman on November 24, 1963, and was blessed with three children, Jim, Dean and Angie.  Raising and mentoring his children was his primary focus.  He and Carol were members of the same card club for over 40 years, even continuing once they moved to Omaha.  Don was also an avid bowler, bowling with his church group for many years.  Don never knew a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Don is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Dean; daughter, Angie and husband, Ben; grandchildren, Lily and Neela; brother, Larry and wife Connie; nieces and nephews and many friends.

Don is preceded in death by his son, Jim; parents, Carl and Freida; sisters: Louisa Ahrens, Hannah Medcalf, Edna Sanders and Viola Rogge; brothers: Martin, Wilbur, Raymond and Earl.

Family will receive friends Thursday, November 21st from 10am to 11am at the West Center Chapel followed by a FUNERAL SERVICE at 11am.  Memorials are suggested to Gethsemane Lutheran Church.

It was with a heavy heart that we learned of Uncle Don’s passing. I have fond memories of visiting Grandma and Grandpa Poppe’s farm that Don worked and what a thrill it was for a town kid to help him with the chores and even help bale hay on the East Place. Carol, may fond memories ease your grief and comfort your children and grandchildren.

Our sympathy to you. We have fond memories of your entire family when you lived at Deshler. We especially got to know Don better while he was janitor at church and enjoyed many conversations. May God comfort you with His steadfast love.
