Donald Lee Hammes, M.D.
July 27, 1932 – March 26, 2023
Donald Lee Hammes, M.D., was born to Cleo and Leonard Hammes on July 27, 1932, in Omaha, Nebraska. Following graduation from Benson High School, he attended the University of Nebraska (B.S. Chemistry, 1954) and the University of Nebraska College of Medicine (M.D., 1958). After completing out-of-state residency programs, he returned to Omaha to open his private practice, where he specialized in internal medicine and allergy and devoted his professional life to treating and caring for patients for more than 40 years.
When he wasn’t working, he loved spending time with his family, eating chocolate and ice cream, traveling, walking, reading, listening to classical music, playing bridge, and dropping the Queen of Spades on unsuspecting Hearts players, both family and friends. After a long and wonderful life, he passed peacefully into rest Sunday morning, March 26, 2023.
Preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Cleo Hammes; his brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Helen Hammes; nephew Douglas Hammes and niece Christina Samson.
Survived by his friend, and former spouse, Sandra Hammes; children: Holly Eisenberg, Timothy Hammes (Kristen), Matthew Hammes (Jennifer), and Elizabeth Kate Hammes; grandchildren Samuel Eisenberg, Megan Hammes, Jacob Hammes, Mallory Hammes, Elise Hammes, Zachary Hammes and Ashley Hammes; and nieces Susan Balvanz (Tim), Cheryl Pollock, Jessica Enguidanos (Stephen) and Mariel Deaguero (David).
A lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church (216 South 34th Street) of Omaha, Nebraska, services will be held at the Church beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 31, 2023.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church, Omaha.
