Whiz kid/Creighton standout and New York Yankee Don Brummer dies at 85.

Don Brummer, born in Woodbine, IA, on August 5, 1937, passed away with his family around him on December 28, 2022.

He was a standout member of the famous Whiz kids baseball team out of Woodbine, IA. His teammates included HOF player Bob Gibson, Don Benning, and Jerry Parks. The team traveled and played all over in the early/mid-50s.

Brummer was a two-sport standout at Creighton University, playing basketball and baseball with his whiz kid teammate Bob Gibson. Brummer and his teammate Jim Berry were known as “the watch guard duo” for Creighton hoops. Brummer was the first Creighton graduate to sign a professional baseball contract with the New York Yankee organization in 1958. Brummer played in the Yankee organization for 6 seasons and then went on to a successful career with the phone company.

Preceded in death by wife, Jo Anne; brother-in-law, Frank Molak. Survived by sons: Mark Brummer, Don (Angie) Brummer, and Michael (Suzan) Brummer, and Timothy Jon Brummer; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Tim Molak (Noel); sister-in-law, Carol Molak Eich (Wayne); nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 18th, 1-4pm (open house style) at Ref’s Sports Bar and Grill, 18920 Edna St. (Harrison St.)

    I will keep Don’s family in my thoughts a prayers. I played for Extra and competed against Don in the late 40’s and 50′.s. A good athlete and nice guy.

    Don was a great guy always remembered as a GREAT athlete in Woodbine. My prayers too Don and all his family.

    I remember Don when he visited our home in 1984 in Des Moines during our shared telephone company days. Don was two years ahead of my basketball playing days at Woodbine, and Don was the GREATEST HERALDED player to graduate from Woodbine, Iowa,.
