KETZLER, Donovan D., Sr. Jan 7, 1924 – Aug 16, 2013 “It’s been a good hunt!” Donovan D. Ketzler, former President of the Dehner Boot Company and retired Major in the United States Cavalry, died at his home Friday. Bette, his beloved wife of 62 years, preceded him in death. ajor Ketzler remained an active horseman and rode his horse, Snowy with his faithful dog, Poteen days before his death. The Nebraska Horse Counsel honored him as Horseman of the Year. He remained an active horseman in large part because of his good friend, Vicki Krecek. He was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1924 to Harold and Gladys Ketzler. His family relocated the family business, The Dehner Boot Company, to Omaha in 1929. He attended Central High School and attended one semester at the University of Nebraska before the start of World War II. He began his service to his nation as a mounted cavalryman at Fort Riley, Kansas in 1942. He spent most of his military career in the China Burma India Theater. After his service he returned to Omaha to make custom-made boots at his family’s business. He remained an active member of the Army Reserves for thirty years achieving the rank of Major and receiving the Medallion of the Order of St George. He was a cofounder of the North Hills Hunt in the early 1960s. He was Master of Foxhounds for the North Hills Hunt from 1984-1989. In 1989 he presented then Mayor of Omaha, P.J. Morgan with a plan to begin a Mounted Patrol. He spent many years developing and supporting the Patrol from its initial two members to its current state. He is survived by his four children: Lynn Lucas and husband Joe, Donovan Ketzler, Jr and wife Mary Ellen, Jonathan Ketzler and wife Mary McSweeney, Jeffrey Ketzler and wife Sue; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. SERVICES Tuesday, August 20th at 11am at Brookside Church, 11607 “M” Circle, Omaha. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Citizens’ Foundation for the Omaha Mounted Patrol, the United States Cavalry Association, the North Hills Hunt, or HETRA.
