Dorothea Atlee Yarnall Schmid was born in Lowell, Massachusetts to Lillian (Ryder) and Waldo “Rusty” Yarnall on May 31, 1935.  She graduated from Westford Academy, one of the oldest public high schools in the United States.  Dottie was a popular athlete who excelled in the classroom.  Her father, Rusty Yarnall, was also a scholar athlete at the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College, and University of Vermont. Her father, a naval officer, also played baseball for the Pittsburg Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, and Boston Red Sox. Her father’s enthusiasm for sports inspired Dottie to be a lifelong New England Patriots fan.  Even this year, Dottie threw a Super Bowl party from her hospital room.

Upon graduation, Dottie decided to make a quick trip to Bellevue, Nebraska to visit her aunt and uncle, Virginia and Robert Bratty, stationed at Offutt Air Force Base.  She promised her father, economics professor and the Athletic Director for University of Massachusetts-Lowell, she would return home to Massachusetts for college that fall.  During her first visit to Nebraska, she met airman and Wisner, Nebraska native, Al Schmid.  She stayed for 63 years.

As Hurricane Edna stormed through New England, Dottie and Al were married in Lowell, Massachusetts on September 11, 1954.

Dottie and Al initially made their home in Wisner, Nebraska.  Moving to South Omaha in 1957, they settled eventually in Papillion, Nebraska to raise their family.

Dottie was an active member at St. Columbkille Parish and School.   You could find Dottie in the church social level preparing meals, attending school activities, and playing bingo.  She continued her loving support of her children and grandchildren at Papillion-LaVista Public Schools and was honored for volunteerism with Midlands Community Foundation, St. Columbkille Parish, and Poor Clare Sisters.  Through the years, Dottie enjoyed her time working as a medical administrative assistant to several doctors in the Omaha area.

Dottie had fun playing bingo, spending the winter in Las Vegas, gardening, and receiving pink carnations.  Her strong faith, perseverance, sincerity, and good humor will be missed.

Dottie is survived by her husband of 62 years, Al Schmid; her son Jeff and wife Amy and their children, Abbie and Bobby; daughter, Kathy Jones and husband Mike and their children, Justin and wife Whitney (and their daughter, Penney, Dottie’s precious great-granddaughter), Joey, and Jared; son Rob and wife Geri and their children, Ryan, Jack and Rachel; daughter Cindy Jensen and her husband Brigadier General Jon Jensen and their children Jake, Kealey, and Atlee.  Dottie was preceded in death by her parents; cousin, Bobby Bratty; and brother-in-law, Duane Dinslage.  Dottie will be greatly missed by her sisters, Jane Walker and Virginia Balliett and husband John; brother, Raymond Yarnall and wife Ginny; her many family members, friends and her fellow bingo friends.

Let us come together in the peace of Christ

to mourn because we are human,

to rejoice because we are Christian,

to thank the Father for the gift of His life,

to celebrate the power of the resurrection of Jesus,

and to sing our alleluias of hope

because we are Easter people in life and in death.
